How much noise
Hi All,
I have a Sherwood TBB14 bandsaw that I use predominately for resawing, mainly 6" boards. I am finally happy with the performance after setting and resetting up using information found here, but am still surprised at how noisy it is when cutting. When running but not cutting it is just a gentle thrumbing sound, but as soon as I start cutting, the noise level increases dramatically. It is a steel on steel squeal, and I suspect it is coming from the bearing guides fitted to the saw. Is this normal, or is it due to crap bearings. They all rotate freely, and are adjusted as per recommendations. I dont have any bandsaw reference other than the bandsaw at work and that is used for cutting stainless tube, and is quiet by comparison!
Any advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers

Hi Wajor
What size blade are you using and how many TPI does it have?Bob Willson

Without actually hearing it, it does sound normal for bandsaws.
When the machine is running, but not cutting, a well adjusted machine will have it's blade running in clearance, with maybe a 'snick, snick' noise as the weld passes throught the guide area. As soon as you start cutting, the blade is pushed back onto the rear guide bearing, and the noise starts..
Things you can do to minimise the noise:
* Inspect all the guide bearings, make sure they rotate freely and without restriction. Replace/lubricate as necessary.
* Grind the back of the blade to smooth out any imperfections. This also enables a tighter radius cut if you do any of that.
Hope this helps,
woodbe.

My 14" Jet makes a hua of a noise when resawing, esp. tas oak and heart rimu. Pine etc not so noisy. I've found a 3/8" skiptooth does the best job. Earmuffs ahoy!

Yeah - mine screams as well when resawing - especially with a 1.3 TPI 3/4" blade, but boy, does that bugger love eating wood

Ditto to the others really. With a rip or cross-cut, there's minimal noise, but resawing - holy moly, especially with Jarrah or Red Gum and such (3tpi 1/2" blade for that work).
Curiously, Duginski's DVD on Band Saw stuff seems to portray a gentle murmur whatever the job. Methinks some studio editing went on here...

Well that makes me feel better, and saved some money - I thought i was going to have to change the bearings.
I'm using a 1" 3TPI blade as I was under the impression that it was best to use as wide as possible. Is that not right? I have got a 3/4" 1.25TPI blade, but the set on it seemed to mean I had to run it through the thickesser a lot to get rid of the saw blade marks.
Cheers
