Re-sawing bandsaw
What do people think re band saws for re-sawing. what is the minimum size ? what brands do people suggest.
I have a Chinese 14 inch and I just do not think it is worth investing in a resaw blade as 1) I do not think it is powerful enough
2) the guide assembly is so so.
Any suggestions appreciated specially for older used machinery.
I am not a China fan
Cheers

Ok, what's your budget, What is the capacity you are looking for? Is this going to be a dedicated resaw, with in and out feed tables and a power feed unit or a bandsaw capable of 300mm height resaw with a 25mm 2tpi band?

A lot of machines these days will be made in Taiwan.
The Laguna 1412 equipped with a resaw king blade will make quick work of most timber. Has a max resaw capacity of 330mm. Generally all 14" saws on the market look to have a resaw capacity between 300-350mm.
Depends on your budget.

I have been using bandsaws a long time, over 40 years. Everything from 10” Chinese ones up to a 4 foot Robinson with a 4 inch wide blade. Presently I only have three in use, a 24” Taiwanese Hafco which is set up for resawing, and a couple of smaller Woodfast ones for general use. I also have a 14” Rikon, which is made in China, it has a 3 hp, single phase motor, the best blade guide system I have ever used, and a really good, easy to use tension system, with microswitch set up so the saw cannot be started when the blade tension is off, which many of the overpriced European saws don’t have. I have used this rikon saw for resawing 10” (250mm) New Guinea rosewood for about 3 years and it has performed faultlessly, I rate it highly. It cost about $1800 new, which in retrospect, was a bargain compared to the European ones. It’s changed my thinking on the Chinese made machines. Any bandsaw is only as good as the blade it’s running and the guy who’s tuning it up. Good luck.

Cheers Riverbuilder,
was it the 10-36 Rikon ? About $1850 from JCWalsh in Victoria.

absolutely agree with riverbuilder... I would choose the Rikon, if I was looking for a new 14" machine which I intended to use for re-sawing 150mm and above. The 10-326 will do the job but is light on power at 1300w. The 10-353 has 2200w, and that >50% extra power will make quite a big difference as you get into high density timbers at full capacity.

If there's little difference of the weight of your saw, and the Rikon, then I would not be expecting much.
Has your saw cast iron wheels?
You could just stick another motor on.
I would think a half inch would be the max blade size for a 130kg saw.
If you want to use a 3/4" blade, then I suggest something at the 200kg mark.
If space is of concern then a 20" compact machine would match the footprint of your existing machine,
they get larger after that.
You don't really need guides if your blade has enough beam tension, but for that to be the case it needs to be tensioned well,
So the frame of the saw needs to be rigid enough to cope.
The best measure of that is weight.
Have you looked at any second hand machines?

Cheers Tom,
yes I have been looking at used machines but there are not that many around and they are pretty pricey for what they are, or at least that is what I thought.

I run a 22 mm blade in the Rikon for resawing and it eats everything.

Riverbuilder,
I was intrigued by your strong endorsement of the Rikon, so did a little bit of researching yesterday. I must admit to being impressed. To date, many of the larger capacity Eastern manufactured saws that I have looked at have a big motor and hefty frames, but are let down by offering poorly thought out ergonomics.
Seeing how the Rikon is made for simple adjustment, such as the guides, and table tilting had me really impressed.

Yes Lance I agree, I’ve used many different saws over the years and for the money, you’d go a long way to better the Rikon I think. I saw a wide belt sander they make the other day and it ran like a watch. Smooth finish and well built.

Where are you located? There's a second hand Hitachi cb75f resaw bandsaw for sale on Gumtree in Perth.
