Default Replacement tyres for BAS 350

    Hi All

My Carbatec BAS 350 tyres have perished and I am looking to replace them before they disintegrate. I can get Carbatec ones but they are still the same material and will therefore deteriorate as well - and aint cheap either. I gather there are other types of tyre, urethane for example. There must be a few BAS 350s about with similar problems. Could someone please let me know if there is a better option than the rubber tyres available?

    Thanks in anticipation

Unhappy Tyres for a 14 inch BAS 350 Carbatec bandsaw

I guess it can't be as common a problem as I expected it would be.
    Cheers from NZ

    Richard,

The Woodworker's Club that I used to be a member of before moving to my current home had two of the two speed Carbatec BAS350 14" Bandsaws and one of the single speed Carbatec CTJ-3501 single speed 14" bandsaws. I also owned a CTJ-3501 myself for a few years before selling it to buy an 18" bandsaw.

Both the Carbatec models seem to have the same rubber tyres. I never experienced any problems with my CTJ-3501, but the Woodworker's Club did have problems with one of their BAS350 bandsaws. Not sure if it is the same problem as you've experienced, but in this case the tyre started to breakup, was sticky, and looked like it had perished. As all the saws were the same age, and had seen similar amounts of work, we couldn't understand why one saw had failed tyres, and the tyres on the rest of the Carbatec bandsaws were almost like new.

It took a while to track down the cause of the poor tyre life on that particular machine. The dodgy machine was located in the woodturning area and was maintained by a different team of club members, compared to the rest of the Club's woodworking machines.

Long story short - it turns out that it was the practice of the club members maintaining that bandsaw to wipe the blade with a rag dampened with WD-40 at the end of each day's use. They would wind the wheels by hand whilst holding the damp rag against each side of the blade. We can't be sure whether it was the WD-40 causing the tyres to perish, but since they stopped wiping the blade with WD-40 each day, the tyres haven't failed in over three years.

Any chance that you've been cleaning the blade or wheels with WD-40 or some other solvent ?

    Regards,

Thanks for the reply. Nope, never wiped them or the blade with anything that I can remember. Actually, I only noticed because a friend who had exactly the same model had to replace the tyres on his bandsaw, so i had a closer look at mine. Its not particularly humid here, a bit damp in the winter but nothing else I have has perished. May have been a bad batch I suppose.

Thanks for the WD40 tip though, I'll bear that in mind.

I was wondering whether they may be a better bet such as these on e-bay. http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/350945556662 but if no-one else has them I'd better stick with carbatec

Hi Richard I have recently replaced the tyres on my band saw with a set of these quick delivery and easy to fit simple instructions and simple tool to stretch them on very happy with them.

Thanks for the lead. They may be a better bet and about the same price. Only thing is the Carbatec bandsaw has 30 mm wheels, so 13.75 inches, not 14. I don' know how much elasticity there is in the Carter tyres, but worth a go.

    Cheers
