ResawKING on my new Laguna SUV 14
G'day all.
Spent some time this arvo putting my recently arrived 32mm ResawKing blade on the Laguna. Took about an hour as this is the first time I've had to install and set-up a new blade.
Anyhoo, that part completed and everything ready to try it out, I rustled up on offcut of 220 x 125 blackwood that i neglected to feed into my woodheater. My mate wanted some 3mm veneers so thought I'd give it a go. Have to say I and he was staggered by the quality of the resawn veeners. - 3mm on all 4 sides and the cut surfaces will only need a light sand ready for finishing.
Truly, I tried cutting some thin veneers with my old Metabo - a dismal exercise in futility. This blade cut (quarter sawn) like a hot knife through butter. What a beauty, the blade is not cheap but worth every penny if you don't want to pay an arm and a leg to get a timber miller to resaw your stuff (DAHIKT!). Now blackwood is not a very hard wood (which is why its such brilliant firewood) so I dug out a 12 inch length of 4" x 4" well seasoned Cedar offcut from a verandah post - weighed a tonne and very sappy still. I decided it might be good to make some box lids out of. Set the resaw at 11mm and ripped 8 lovely quarter sawn pieces with out a hitch plus it filled the workshop with the loverly scent of cedar. Anyway, as time goes by I'll report back some more.
Here's some pics to prove my tale. Sorry about the rotations - just stand on your head or have a lie down!
ResawKing.jpg First cut veneers. They'll be hung on the trophy wall.
3mmVeneer.jpg 3mm blackwood veneers. Got about 30 @ 800mm out of the rough piece of wood.

Looks great and that saw is at the top of my want (need?) list. That looks like the standard fence....how would you rate it? I was thinking of going for the driftmaster fence if/when I get this saw but if the standard fence is sufficient I would be happy to save $400+.

gday mate. Yep, she's the ducks guts. First off, never tell the missus you WANT something for he shed...tell her you NEED it! Else you'll be working with a stone mallet and a piece of flints stone To make stuff.
The fence as supplied is a very we'll made unit and is able to flipped to use a low side guide if needed. I'd say that for anything over about a metre in length would require the drift master particularly for bigger stuff like 150 x150 hardwood. But you needn't fork out for a drift master as there are plenty of plans on the net for making Resaw jigs.
The other thing to consider if you're going to do a lot of resawing is to build an infeed and out feed extension for the platen as it's pretty small. I'm going to make some using rollers in a metal frame as I have some 3 metre stock to Resaw and it's too heavy to cut without feed/outfeed support.
hope that helps.
cheers

I noticed John Samual posted, recently, a really good looking resaw fence he made for his Laguna.

I've tried everything, but I cant get my Resaw king to Resaw big bits. The drift is hideous.
Small bits are no problem, but I've been trying some 18 cm wide red sheoak and it made a huge bloody mess of it.
Does anyone have a setup guide? I'll start from scratch and assume nothing.

hey Evan. If you're getting excessive drift, check that the blade is correctly running between BOTH upper and lower ceramic guides. And that the back of the blade is touching the ceramic thrust bearings upper and lower. If they are adjusted ok then increase the blade tension not more than a quarter of a turn at a time of the blade tensioner on top of your saw until drift and twist (if any) stops. I've been resawing stuff up to 300mm high into 3mm veneers using a shop made jig with absolutely brilliant results.
hope this is of some use mate.
cheers

Evan,
Does this sound familiar: I put a Re-saw King onto my new SUV. I set it up and it cut thin material fine, but as the material got thicker, the drift increased until finally it pulled the wood off the fence. Made a terrible mess. No matter what I did, I could not adjust for the drift.
So, returned the blade and got a new one. Same problem ... not quite as bad ... but still completely unacceptable. I could not cut wide veneers, which is why the saw was bought.
The third blade worked. I needed to stone the back of the weld, but it cut beautifully.
Spoke to the owner of Gregory Machinery (where the saw and blade were bought) when picking up my second blade. He explained that every now and again they got a batch of crook blades. He was not happy, because the poor blades reflected on his business. As one of their blokes said on Saturday at the wood show, the customer has every right to expect an expensive Laguna branded blade to perform well.
It is entirely possible that you have a crook blade ... if not likely ... I heard on the weekend that Gregory Machinery got some crook blades recently. Check your set-up. Adjust for drift using a thin (say one inch) board. Cut about an 8-10 inch wide and about 2 foot long board into a wedge, so the wedge thickness varies from zip to 8-10 inches. Now re-saw that board, so as you feed it into the saw, it will be cutting ever thicker material as you proceed up the wedge. If it cuts well when the saw is cutting thin material, but gets progressively worse as the cut gets deeper and deeper, almost certainly you have a crook blade.
Hope this helps.
Cheerio!
John
