Default RHINO Band Saw Drive Belt

I recently acquired a "RHINO" brand (made in China in 1998), that appeared to be in restorable condition, however the drive belt is unusual to say the least! It's a Micro-V style belt with an unheard of pitch at 3.2mm (1/8"). the belt that it was fitted with is a Gates Micro-V K030245 (24.5" long) meaning it has a K profile of 3.56mm pitch and doesn't engage with the pulleys at all well. After much sleuthing, I came to the sad conclusion that the correct belt is impossible to obtain but it could be made usable with a PH section profile of 8 V's, which whilst mentioned in some belt catalogs, is a rather elusive item. Can somebody steer me in the right direction? The Rhino BS model is RBS12A (1998) 12". Thanks guys.

Sounds mighty like the belt for my POS No Name rusted up, finger mashing, belt throwing, bearing eating horror. (Kids cry when I turn it on)

    The belt has a 3.5mm pitch and is 10mm wide with 4 V's....3BP7000 | BELT (POLY VEE BELT) #7000 | machineryhouse.com.au

Just had a look at google images using the code you supplied and it looks like exactly the same machine. It must have been a popular generic rebrand at the time.

I've replaced all the bearings (freely available on eBay), tires (urethanes from Rockler), the belt and fixed the upper guide block (which was laughable).

    It now consumes fewer fingers

Thanks Evanism, it does indeed look very similar. I fired off an email to them and await a reply for the exact length. I had a look at the HAFCO model it suits and the drive pulleys look identical - here's hoping it's right, or it's $160 down the drain!i!i!

These were the tires I bought from Rockler.... http://www.rockler.com/product.cfm?page=30866

The old rubber ones were fubar. Did both at once.

Fitting the lower tire was challenging as the belts are deliberately very tight. While I was at it I replaced the bearings in the upper and lower wheels and in the tension pulley. Each has two bearings, one fore and the other aft. You'll need to drift them out or use a puller. A circlip remover is needed too to get the wheel off.

I did the bearings on the guides too.

This was cheap insurance. A bearing from 1998 might be a mystery. But a brand new ZZ style bearing costing $5 for 10 (and free post from China!) was cheap insurance. (the wheels use different bearings than the tension idler, unsurprisingly)

Replacing the belt, bearings and wheel urethane made the machine a pleasure to use (other than the motor being disturbingly grindy and strangely underpowered for the claimed 3/4HP)

I'm building a Mk-2 version of the bearing guides based on Mathias' examples on woodgears.ca .... I really hate the way the manufacturers mounted the thrust surface sideways. WHAT'S WITH THAT!!!!???

Good luck. $160 is a good price for a doer-upper.

Wouldn't you know it - the belt is on back order until mid September Sigh
$5 for 10 x 606ZZ bearings is stunning. Up here in Cairns I paid $30 for only four!i!i! - Damn!

Haha, something as esoteric as 606ZZ steel covered dust proof ball earnings in northern whoop-whoop is certainly going to attract a bit of a premium.

eBay is my friend. China is my best mate! It all comes from honkers and is in the postbox in 3 days.

Different story if you're commercial and need it in a hurry, otherwise it's eBay and post is nearly always free

Still, the $10 will be long forgotten after you've resawn a few lovely local trees

    all is not lost.

Part of my research was that this model is very generic in china (not here). It is still made by at least 148000 Chinese companies. I found heaps of factories in china that sold them via Alibaba (but it's bulk, so you buy by the container, which is 80 bandsaws at a time....)

There was one in taiwan that sold the parts.

I went with HFMW as I wanted a few blades too. They are hard to get ...the diameter is odd for some reason.

Anyhow, let me dig in the morning and I'll find that supplier. They are always super keen to post out a part and sometimes just do it for free. (maybe I just ask nicely or something)

    Easy.

Alibaba.com and searched "bandsaw 12" and it listed 96 suppliers of exactly this style.

One good thing about China is it seems if one person makes a good one to start, 100 more will crop up and copy it. Different name, but the specs are 100% exact. Search for the specs, not our western brands....they don't mean anything there (my understanding is that to copy a person is a high compliment of the originators skill).

This dude can sell you parts: Zicar 12" Woodworking Band Saw Bs12 - Buy 12" 550w Bandsaw,Small Vertical Band Saw,Mini Vertical Band Saw Product on Alibaba.com

Ask nicely and send some loot via PayPal. It's a blind sale, the "price" usually is a guess and risky by western standards, but I've never been burnt. They are keen to deal. It's not wrapped in a pretty bag, they usually just get a grunt to grab one from a box and stuff it in an envelope.

It's a cool way to buy. Deep bargains.

Congratulations on your new band saw. I am not really a fan of China stuff, but I have a few and luckily, it's working good. Did you mention you gonna restore your saw, good luck..
