Question Riser Kit or Not to Riser Kit

    G'day All,

Bought a Jet 14" BS on the weekend (1hp version) and I am debating whether I should by the riser kit before I buy a few blades for it.

I would say that the greater majority of the work I will do the 150mm will more than suffice, but I can envisage the rare occasion when I will want to put something just a bit thicker through it.

I read a lot that the riser kits are only any good with softwoods above the 150mm mark, but what if you fed a harder wood through at a slower rate, or am I really showing my ignorance here?

I also read it is something that is not easily reversible so I want to make the decision before I get more blades. Is that to an accurate statement?

Thanks in advance for your advice.

    Toasty,

The riser for the Jet 14"BS is a good investment for the money. It is easy to fit. Takes only a couple of minutes to put on or take off, but is a good idea to have two people. Just make sure that you have two spanners - one 15/16" openended and one 15/16" ring spanner is the go. Shifters are to difficult to get in and hold the oversized bolt/nut that comes with the kit.

As far as cutting, the larger depth of cut is no problem in general use as you get the correct guide arm extension post with the kit and it works fine down to 1/8" blades. When swapping the guide posts, be careful to follow the instructions and make sure that you slide one post out as you slide the other one in or you will loose the ball bearing. Don't ask me how I know.

As far as cutting wider than 150mm, for the number of times that you will do it there is no problem. Just make sure you take your time and use a wider blade. My LITS has actually cut fine curves with a 1/8" blade in blocks over 150mm but only over short distances.

Why do I never seem to cut "too long"?
