sawing into planks
what kind of band saw do i get (cheap around $200-400) that can sawn 40 cm diameter logs in to planks.

If you made a jig to hold the log so you could slice off ~10cm off one side, (or a bit off both sides) you could then lay the log on the flat and resaw the rest of it with a 14" bandsaw with a 12" (30cm) resaw capacity. Usually this would require getting one with a cast frame and added riser block or a steel framed one capable of that height of cut. I have a 14" Grizzly O555 bandsaw with riser block giving a 12" resaw capacity. I run it with a 3tpi 3/4" blade. Depending on the type of wood and the speed at which you want to cut get one with the most powerful motor you can afford. Fine Woodworking Magazine did a review of 14" bandsaws in their latest edition with some suprizing results as far as some of the big name brands went. So if you can find a 14" cast frame with a riser block, second hand you could at a pinch get away with that.
