    Default Sbw-4300

I am in the market for a decent bandsaw, and I think that the 4300 will suit my 'needs' (OK then I have one in my dreams !! ).
Obviously there are many brands of this model; Carba-Tec, Hafco, Ledacraft, Sherwood etc.
So far, I have found the following differences according to Australian Woodworker review October 2004:

    1) All, except the Carba-Tec model have 2 speeds
    2) All, except Hafco are listed as being able to tilt 10 L / 45 R
    3) Only Carba-Tec have cast iron wheels
    4) All except Ledacraft are listed as using Ball bearing guides.

    Questions:
    a) Are the above statements true ?
    b) Is the left tilt important ?
    c) Is 2 speeds important, as I can only see myself cutting wood (both hard and soft) ?

    Regards

    Soren

PS. attended the show on Friday, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

On point 2 the Hafco tables tilt 45 to the right only. I don't think left tilt is necessary for my needs but others might find it handy. It is recommended to use the lower speed for some timbers and the other for the rest. However most just use the one speed and regulate the rate of feed instead.

The Carba-Tec unit is at the top of my list.
Does the table actually tilt both ways, ie 10 / 45 ?

    regards

    Thumbs up

I also have the 4300 model I bought mine from GPW. Very nice. Tilts 45/15. 2 speeds etc as you have said. The only thing I would say though is that you need to buy some quality blades.

    Thumbs up 5300 model

I have had the sbw 5300 model for 12 mths now & the only difference is in the larger capacity.(throat) It is a very well built machine with a nice rack & pinion table tilt.
I have only used the slowest of the 2 speeds & if you could see it re saw 150 x 50 SOLID jarrah you would surely be impressed.
I purchase my blades through Henry Bros & although I paid over $200 for 3 different blades, it was VERY well worth the $$$$!!!
I had actually ordered the 4300 model & then had reservations about its capacity so upgraded to the bigger unit. No regrets!

I have been trying to get one of these for the last 3 weeks.

    Prices I have been quoted
    GPW - 1195 + 120 freight + 2 blades
T'con - 1299 + freight (offered to bring it to the show for pickup)
    WMS - 1400
Get woodworking - 1400 (leda rebadge)
Ron Mack - 1500 - assembled, tested and delivered
Carba tec - 1100 !! none in stock when I called but expected at the end of that week.

I duly called CT and the stock hadn't arrived, nor did it arive the next week.
    Sound familiar?
At the show they were priced on special at 1170! One sales man told me they were in stock and could be delived 18/10. A I was ordering another said it was out of stock still, but I could take the one from the display!!! A third staff member told them I couldn't have the one on display as it was going to the tas show!!
When they asked if I would like to order one I explained my CT policy, due to problems in the past I never order from them - I will buy off the floor but their track record for orders is deplorable. They redily agreed but were sure thet the order of saws would be in on the 26th, and if I want the special price I should order now.

I went home without a bandsaw.

If they come in on the 26th I may buy one from them - if they give it to me for 1100, other wise I shop interstate.

I should mention that northern machinery, GPW, MIK and Timbercon were very helpful in my investigations

Back on track - I want a SBW4300, and I want the cast wheels for the extra weight.

    Default Carba-Tec 4300

    Thanks for all your info
Visited their store at Bayswater this morning, and had a good look at their floor model.
Did not ask about availability, but asked about their 15% relocation discount off the first purchase in January, and was told, that the 15% is off the first item, 'so make it a good one'.
Looking to wait until January, and hope that they have 1 in stock.
Anyone got one of these units mounted on a mobile base ? Stability etc ?
