Strange noise
Hi all,
I have a 18" Jet bandsaw that has started to make a strange screeching noise when making a cut - here's an mp3 bandsaw.mpg
Anyone got any ideas about what could be causing this?
Cheers,
Ben

Do you have roller guides installed, or just blocks? Could be one of the guide bearings (usually the back thrust bearing) getting a bit long in the tooth.

I've got guide bearings - that would make sense, I'll check it out. It sounded to me like a slipping belt, but the belt seems fine.

Yep, guide bearings. Often a bit of adjustment can sort it out.
I occasionally get that sound if I haven't spent as much time as I should setting up after a blade change. Those were the droids I was looking for.

There are several reasons why your band saw is noisy.
Your blade guide bearings might be shot. Try oiling the bearings.
The blade might not be properly tensioned.
The blade might also not be correctly installed.
Check if the guide blocks are too tight because if that so, it will make noise .
But, inspect first every square inch in your machine, locate the source of the
noise. If you didn't find any problem , perhaps, it could just be a noisy saw

Yep, definitely the bearings top center ones is my bet.
I have the same machine 18" Jet and have to replace them every 6 months or so.
Any bearing shop carries them they are 6202zz cost around $5-$6.50 ea
you need 14 of 'em or you can go on line and buy them from the States,
I just bought 20 last week cost $44.00 which included priority post got them in 5 days.
Waste of time just replacing the noisy ones as they will all have wear.
Cheers

Looks like some of the bearings do need replacing, no doubt due to poor adjustment
Thanks guys!

If you haven't got the new bearings yet
Try here 10 Bearing 6203ZZ 17x40x12 Shielded Ball Bearings
they are 14.00 for 10 plus around $11.00 postage
Got 20 of them last week speedy service as well.

Rather than using the ZZ or 2Z version of these bearings on a bandsaw it is much better to use the 2RS version (2 rubber seals). I replaced the ZZ ones on my bandsaw with the 2RS and haven't replaced them since, the ZZ fail because of dust that the 2RS effectively excludes.

2RS two rubber seals, one each side, so a sealed bearing. But the rubber seals will keep more crud out of the bearings????
