Tensioning mechanism problem on new Laguna LT18 3000 bandsaw
IMAG1031.jpgIMAG1033.jpgI just received a new Laguna LT18 3000 series bandsaw. There seems to be a problem with the blade tension mechanism. Firstly the indicator is nowhere near the tension diagram and secondly it seems that the tension spring is almost fully compressed even with the quick release lever in the release position. The component diagram in the manual is for a version that has the tension mechanism in a different position to the LT18.
I asked the supplier for information as to how to fix this. They said there is a washer that may have been displaced in the transport. They email some instructions to fix this but the instructions are for the LT14SUV which also has the tension mechanism in a different location and I haven't been able to reconcile them with my situation.
Has anyone else had this problem and if so how did you fix it?

If it's new, then it's not your problem. Keep the pressure on your supplier until they fix it. If only we got the Italian Lagunas...
Edit: Guessing obviously but, sure there just isn't too much tension on the blade? If you back it right off does the indicator move down?

Leguna LT18 tensioning
I backed off the blade tension until the indicator was in the tension diagram region. The blade was a bit on the too loose side. When I tested the cut the best seems to be when the indicator is just above the tension scale. It seems that the tension spring may not be strong enough?

Hello Mike
There are several levels of quality in Laguna bandsaws and if you go to the Laguna website they quite cleverly have several bandsaws listed with some saying "LT xx" and others that say "Italian LT" so I would assume that the more budget friendly bandsaws are probably made in China.
Basically the 3000 series is cheaper, so according to their website if you get the LT 18 its $3800+ and the LT18 3000 is $2195+ which means only one thing its made in China not Italy.

Steve,
December 2013 issue of Aust Woodworker, page 14-15 lists the Laguna 1412, SUV and LT18 as originating from China.
Only bandsaws coming out of Italy are the Minimax S400P, S45N, S500P and S600P.
There is a 2013 Bandsaw Survey in this issue.

...according to Gregorys Machinery the Laguna Bandsaws we get over here are made in Taiwan.
There are Italian made Laguna Bandsaws which are available in the US but not here
Have a search for half inch shy and his review of his Italian made Laguna Bandsaw, found it fer ya...
