Wheel Alignment problems - HELP + rubber tyres Vs cork?
I have recently purchased a used SOCOMEC 460 bandsaw. The machine is in excellent condition and appears to have had only light use. I have purchased it to upgrade from a standard 14" model due to the amount of resawing I perform. I recognise the SOCOMEC is still far from the perfect resaw machine in this size but it is about as big as I can fit in my workshop. My question related to the alignment between the upper and lower wheels. Iam certain they are around 1/4" or 6mm out of alignment (lower wheel further back). It is almost impossible to verify as the welded frame makes it impossible to lay a straightedge across both wheels. Despite owning a few bandsaws and having tuned them all for resawing I have never had to adjust the wheels into alignment. Hence my question: can anyone guide me in this process? I have attached a couple of photos of the bottom wheel both front and rear to understand how the shaft and bearings are aligned. The 4 bolts at the rear appear to be arranged to keep a bushing centred and I presume the bolt from the front side can be loosened to move the shaft in and out but I'm not sure. There is no guidance in the manual. Any help would be appreciated.
Also, this bandsaw has cork lined wheels as opposed to the usual rubber tyres I have used before. There is some wear on the cork but can anyone provide guidance on the benefits of cork Vs rubber and vice versa. If I need to have the wheels upgraded with rubber tyres is there anyone in the Brisbane area that can be recommended?
Many thanks
Troy

Hi Troy,
You could try these Gregory Machinery - Quality Woodworking Machinery .They are at Richlands.
That is were I get my bandsaw tyres and other parts.
I hope that helps.
Cheers Graham.

Does it work? If not worry about the wheel alignment and tyres.

Socomec 460
Yes, it runs just beautifully but drift is horrible when resawing. New blades will improve the resawing ability and I have a couple to try now, but I would also like to get the bottom wheel tracking on centre to avoid additional wear on the cork covered wheels.

Tracking issues are generally caused by the band not being positioned on the top wheel correctly.

The mounting for lower wheel axle seems to be the same as the Hammer N4400. I had a problem with this machine with the blade tracking at the very front edge of the bottom wheel. But by adjusting the 4 bolts (before loosening the centre bolt first and moving the blade guides out of the way) the bottom axle can be tilted in any direction to bring the blade to the centre of the wheel. It helps if you have a mate to spin the wheels by hand giving feedback while you adjust the bolts at the back. E.g. by loosening the top bolt and correspondingly tightening the bottom bolt the wheel will tilt backwards and the blade will move to the rear of the wheel. The lateral tracking can be adjusted accordingly. I hope this makes sense and good luck.
