Default What are satellite dish's used for?

Wondering does anyone know what these Satellite dishes are used for?

I bought a house and on either side of the roof is one of these dishes.

There's no TV antenna mount on the house so maybe they were used to pickup the TV channels.

I'm thinking about getting a smart TV and I have the internet covered and would also like to receive the free TV channels.

They are to pick up satellite TV, or maybe pay TV such as Foxtel. You will require a Satellite receiver appropriate to what you wish to receive, there is a lot of information on Google.

They would have been used for picking up Foxtel and/or an internet provider. With the growth of better wired communications (including the NBN) they are pretty much obsolete. My house was built in 1995 and when I bought it in 2011 it had two dishes for Foxtel and a bigger one for a Satelite broadband system. I removed them all as I was able to get wired broadband and had no interest in cable TV; after the NBN rollout I was able to access much better intenet anyway.

I'd Googled it before posting and its all too confusing.
Now I'm thinking I'll remove them and sell on cheaply and use the other as a bird bath.

For my internet I have the Telstra NetGear wi-fi thingy and I do have the NBN Co thingy on the roof.

As others have said, they are largely obsolete if there is decent internet connectivity, so may be hard to move on and sell. They also require the appropriate receiver to function, no receiver makes them more useless and harder to sell. Consider rubbish or two bird baths.

Sorry that what I meant sell $20 as a potential birth bath project.

It’s not quite obsolete, especially as you have wireless internet. I had the dish installed last year for Foxtel.

The IQ4 box is very good and either receives satellite broadcasts or streams the same programming.

If you record stuff you can skip the ads which some streaming services don’t allow.

If you have reliable NBN with high bandwidth then you can stream the same content without the dish.

This is a Telstar satellite dish.

It would have been used for TV, satellite phone calls (gods that must have cost) and perhaps data services such as Teletext.

    Utterly obsolete.
