    Default Try a diode

I'm not sure if this will work, but you could try putting a 4A diode in series with the active wire. This will at least halve the power to the motor.

I stand to be corrected on this.

..and that's the point... am I willing to make a JayCar kit, which costs over $200 when I could buy it mostly pre-assembled, if it does the same job, if it works.

    if..

    if...

when I've got my head stuck up the something or other of a dilemma, it's time to ask a question.

Thanks for the link, it's been bookmarked.

I didn't know that!! Beauty, learned something new today! A/C motors have always been a bit of a mystery to me. Maybe I'd better stick to my tubes (valves) and condensers (capacitors)..

The Silicon Chip "single phase VSD" does what it does by simply connecting the motor between two outputs of a conventional three phase 220V VSD.

I took a cheap ($98) Chinese inverter and connected a single phase motor between two outputs, and voila, we have single phase speed control. Slightly lower theoretical full power output, but on the whole a most satisfactory experience from hardware I already had laying around. The Chinese inverter is also far more programmable.

    I have.
    Works well with my
    1. Ryobi SC-160 Scroll Saw
    2. My pedestal drill Press.
    3. My desktop drill press cum up-down moving + spinning Drums sander.

Did not work with my ANTIQUE ELU DB-180 wood lathe that has an induction motor with centrifugal switch.

Altronics still selling this kit today.

Default Silicon Chip Magazine induction motor speed controller kit is STILL cost effective

I already got 3 out of 4 machines working

Even for my antique ELU Wood lathe, I can always replace the 60yo motor with a 1HP 3-phase motor for below $200
    3-phase motor.jpg
    or
a 0.75 kW Motor (1 HP) 240 V Single Phase Permanent Split Capacitor for $265.

ONE SPEED CONTROLLER for MULTIPLE EXISTING MACHINES IS IMO COST EFFECTIVE
