    Default VFD install help - Hammer N4400

    I'd like to make sure I'm thinking along the right lines, and harness some of the forum knowledge as I have little experience with VFD's. I have a sparky friend who handles VFD's for the mines, who will help with final wiring - I'd just like to get everything clear in my head before then so I wast as little of his time as possible.

    I've already had considerable help and ongoing advice from several forum members, for which I am grateful. I'm sharing the load a bit here!

    Background: I'm converting my 3 phase Hammer N4400 to run off single phase with a Powtran VFD.

    It would be useful if experienced forum members could check my thinking as I get my head around 3 phases and VFD's. This is theory at the moment. No electrons are flowing!

    The original motor could not be converted in the junction box:

    I found a gnarled old local motor winder who brought each coil pair out for me - he just stuck each coil pair into the connector in the junction box so that they can now be wired as needed:

    So now I have the original coloured wire plus a black wire for each coil.

    Going off the original box and the three phase colour diagram,

    L1 is my motor red wire, L2 is my Blue, and L3 is my White. (I'm assuming this is important, and that the coils need to be energised in sequence?)

    The VFD has a U, V, and W connector to go to each phase. Via the wisdom of the internets, I believe L1 goes to U, L2 = V, and L3 = W?

    Which leads me to exercise my amazing drawing skillz to come up with this wiring diagram for the motor connections and VFD:

    Am I on the right track, or have I got it all back to front, inside out and altogether backwards...?

    Your Delta connection diagram looks correct to me - confirm with sparky.
    Have you confirmed each relevant bLack wire coil continuity with a multimeter, if so I'd be labelling each one.

    In practice on a 3P electric motor any L wire can be connected to U, V or W.
    As long as you end up with 3 connections each with one input (L) wire and one output (U, or V or W) wire.
    If the motor goes backwards interchange any one pair of inputs or outputs. ie swap L1 with L2, or U with a W.

    Bernard, give me a call if you need any help. The black wires are already labelled. You can see 1,2 and 3 wraps of copper wire on the black leads. It looks like the rewinder has set it up for Delta for you. You/your electrician should test it though before hooking it up.
    Connect the motor on the bench before you put it back in the Hammer. Give it a run and make sure everything is working ok. I'll run you through the auto config if you are not confident.
    Ideally, you need to make up a stop/start/speed control that replaces the buttons on the column of the N4400. Mount the drive, in a suitable enclosure, on the back of the saw (where the inlet socket is) and connect the new controls through to the VFD. That was my thinking for the installation anyway.
