Good idea to use an image search string Chris.
That search string shows mainly VFDs fitted to mills with just a sprinkling of remote control panels

Hi all. New to this site. Incredible amount of knowledge shared in this thread. Thank you! I have a 3ph 415 Y motor on my Luna thicknesser and adding a VFD to run on single phase. Reading this thread, I got confused in relation to what point I change the motor to Delta. Do I change the spindle wiring from Y to D, or does the VFD change it to delta?

Welcome.
The motor has to be changed from Y to delta (∆), the VFD will not do it for you.
Some motors can be changed from Y to ∆ in the connection box, others have to be changed internally,
Turn the power off and remove the plug.
Then open up the motor connection box and take and post a photo of the internals of the box and we might be able to tell you whether it's possible to do it there or not

Thank you very much for the quick response. I was wrestling trying to add a photo to my original post. It should be there now. Under the cover plate it has wiring guide for D also.

That is a very easy one Pete. You just need to re position the bridges on the terminals as per the instructions under the cover and you should be good to go.

Good to see you got an easy one Pete.
One more VERY important thing. You MUST only connect the VFD DIRECT to the motor - this means removing any switches in the between the motor and the VFD. If you leave the switch in and inadvertently turn it off while the motor is running this will blow Chips and Caps in the VFD. I know this because I have done in on a cheap VFD.
In most cases it is easier to strip put all the 3P switches/contactor etc and wring as you won't be using it anyway. The VFD provides the motor protection in place of the old contactor.

Luna IMG_0379.JPGThank you Both very much. Bob, i was just replying with the same question... This does have a switch for selecting spindle drive. see below image. I will only be using the thicknesser, so i am not too concerned, but interested to see what you would suggest in this situation?

We need more info. Does the spindle have its own motor?
BTW that cabinet/enclosure the old switch is in looks like it might be a suitable place for VFD.
Remove all the switch gear, put the front metal panel on a hinge so you could cover the hole with some acrylic and bring the VFD controls through as remotes,
or
Recut hole suit to allow the VFD to poke through.

no - just the one motor. i have not powered it up (lack of three phase) to actually understand how it works. the only thing i can assume is that it might reverse the direction of the motor. in which case, the VFD would do this anyway.

thank you so much for your time Bob. I know this is a seperate discussion all in itself, however i noticed on your original post that a lot of your wires from motor to VFD, and VFD to wall vary in colour and size from machine to machine. Do you change the cable conductor sizing based on your own calculations, or this is a result of wires that were available to you at the time?

If the cable is long enough and checks out I often use (a portion of) the 3P cable that came with original machine to connect between the VFD and the motor.
If I'm changing the motor I use either what else I have around or I buy new cable because it is quite cheap (~$2/m)
The cable should match the VFD/motor power but it doesn't matter if the cable is over rated.
For 1HP and under I typically use 1mm, for 2-3HP I typically use 1.5 mm, and above that I use 2.5mm.
For SP wiring between the mains GPO and the VFD I do the same thing. A few years ago my son who works in IT gave me a large bag of "computer kettle cords" that ranged from 2 core 1mm light weights, up to chunky 1.5mm 3 core cables. I usually cut these down to suit what I need. But SP cable is also cheap. I found a couple of 25m long 1.5mm extension cords on special and I bought these and chopped these up for VFD input power leads as the price/m was cheaper than buying bulk cable.
If the cable run between the VFD and the Motor is longer than a couple of meters it is recommended that you use shielded cable.
The only case where this really affects me is between the VFD and Dust collector motor (5m) but I didn't do it even though I probably should have.
I managed to find 3/4 of a roll of really nice 6 core shielded 1mm wire in a skip but it's too lightweight for use with the 4HP DC motor.
I can get some indication of how much RF the VFD setups are emitting by trying AM radio reception in my shed. Mine is pretty well bad and as far as radio reception inside the shed was concerned I got around that buy buying a Digital Radio. The sheetmetal skin of the shed seems to keep most of the RF inside the shed so it doesn't upset the neighbours too much.
