Reversing Camera
I'm thinking of building an external spare tyre rack that connects to the tow bar. It's only going to be used on longer road trips when I have a full vehicle. As part of this project one of the things I wouldn't mind incorporating into the wheel bracket is an Auxiliary rear Camera. As I am going to set up an auxiliary number plate and number plate light I'd be OK with a camera that is powered by the trailer socket 12V and WIFIs back to my mobile in the vehicle. As usual I had a look on line and they start from $15 for a low-res, 90º unit through to multi angle, 1020p costing hundreds of $. These also come with their own screen which I don't really need as I'm happy enough to use my Mobile phone for this. Can anyone recommend one that is half reasonable.
The cheap ones are getting terrible reviews with regards their wifi and night time viewing performance.
Thanks.

Can't recommend a specific unit Bob, but if it were me I'd be buying the best unit I could afford. This is not something you want to be unreliable. Nor do you wan't a camera that's going to lull you into a false sense of security at night or in strong sunlight.

Yeh BIL is basically making the bracket for nicks as he wants to eventually get a tow bar for his vehicle was well so I wont mind forking out for the camera. The reviews of the cheapie cameras say exactly what you are saying . You start reversing and the WIF signal craps out or there's not enough light to see properly etc. The camera I already have on the vehicle is outstanding so I wont suffer anything that's poor quality.

I had one fitted to my Navara twincab few years ago.
Not the cheapest, fitted by someone I trust and knew my quality concerns.
He said the camera can make or break it. Sold me one with really decent night vision.
It's amazing.
You mention taking power from your rear harness.
Is that existing camera linked by wire?
Could you piggyback off same?
Wireless can be brilliant, but....
Certainly wouldn't buy cheap otherwise frustrating waste of rear viewing time.

I definitely agree about using a decent camera.
The existing camera is on the hatch door so routing a wire back to it would be nightmare.
When the wheel is in the upright position it should easily be well clear of brake lights, rear indicators, reversing lights. However the number plate and its light will be covered so I will need an auxiliary number plate and its light. My plan for the number plate light is to wire up a 7 pin flat trailer tow bar plug and draw power for that light from the pin #7 on the 7 pin flat trailer tow bar socket power and power the camera from the reversing light which is pin 2. bearing in mind I will be using my phone inside the car as the viewing screen.
