Benchtop Mortiser and new set of hollow mortice chisels - for sale not auction
For Sale (not an auction) ...
Sherwood Bench Top Mortiser with a full set of unused hollow mortice chisels.
This machine was owned by a dear friend of mine who passed away a few years ago. His widow has asked me to sell his machines, and this is the first I will be offering.
The morticer looks identical to the current model sold by Timbercon, which is selling for $399. The set of Carbatec hollow mortice chisels are unused (except the 1/4", which I polished up to make a test mortice. It is otherwise new). A new set of chisels is $99.
To be frank, I do not know much about these machines, never having used one before. I spent time cleaning away some surface rust and lubricating all sliding parts. It is in good condition. The motor runs smoothy and quietly. As far as I can tell, it is all there baring the chuck key, which has gone awol. It uses a 1/2" key. (Edit: a new key has been purchased and is now available).
Here are some images ...
No doubt someone more knowledgeable will do a better job, but the mortice went about 1" into pine without much effort.
Price: $150
Pick up only at my home in Rossmoyne.
PM if interested.

Yep, terrible - never tried this before. That was just to demonstrate that the machine works. There are steps to setting up the machine before using it seriously.
I prefer my mortice chisels.

If you square the chisel to the fence and sharpen the chisel it will probably cut a reasonable mortise, but might struggle at more than 3/8". The other problem is most of these chisels come from China, with huge discrepancies in manufacturing. In most cases the auger tears a circular hole bigger than the chisel sides, because it's machined out of true. The tenon shoulder will often hide the rough mortise, but joint strength is compromised if the fit is dodgy.

Thanks Pete
There are many videos on set up. Here is an excellent one ..
Sharpening the chisels is also very important.
I did the minimum of both. The buyer will complete this area. I just wanted to demo that it all works. I think that the price offered is very reasonable, even if one replaces the chisels (which are decent enough) with more expensive ones. The one I quickly honed was pretty flat. What I could not do was hone the inside of the bevels. Carbatec sell an inexpensive kit ($69) for that. Squaring the chisels and honing them would produce a vast difference in the result.
The machine is solid and a good entry level for someone looking to make traditional mortice-and-tenon joints by machine. As most know, I am a hand tool user, so the morticing machine is for sale.
