Free wood lathe and motor
Hi guys,
I have a wood lathe that I would like to give to a good home.
The lathe was hand-made in 1995 by a good friend when he was an Army apprentice fitter & turner at Bonegilla Victoria (49th class). It was built as part of a final assessment project for his fitting and turning trade. He asked me to store it for him many years ago, and while I have managed to do this, I am no longer able to do so. He doesn't want it back and has asked me to 'get rid of it'. I think it deserves a better life than to be scrapped because it still operates very well and is a very robust piece of equipment (as is the electric motor!). It also has some military history I guess.
I live in the northern suburbs of Brisbane so please let me know if you'd like to arrange a pick-up.
Cheers,
Lanks

I'd love to take it off your hands
Hi Lanks,
Im keen to take it off your hands (it would give me a project - as if I need another one!) over Christmas (or maybe much later)! I probably wouldn't be able to collect until next weekend when I can borrow a vehicle with a towbar and a trailer. So if that suits you please PM with contact and collection address so I can organise a time.
Regards
David

A bit unusual
Hi John,
You may not realise as a new member but the usual deal here on the forum is that the first on-forum response gets first dibs. I'm not too fussed - its yours to give away after all - but a behind the scenes deal isn't what I have usually seen happen and not what I expected.
Regards
David

I did not realise that that was the etiquette on this forum; I enquired if I could still take it as I could not pick it up this weekend if it was still acceptable; there were no other posts on this at the time,
Apologies, you may have it David else let me know.

Oops
Hi David,
I sincerely apologise - I simply used my email account to respond chronologically. I wasn't prepared to go back on my word until I saw the offer below for you to have first dibs.
Can you please confirm you are still interested and I'll then send you a PM.
Cheers,
John

Thanyou for your courtesy
Hi fields,
Thanks for the courtesy. That is a great thing about these forums and something that makes us all feel welcome.
I could pick the lathe up this weekend - but it would go into a shed to be restored and played with in the next few months. Essentially I am interested in the lathe to "have a play" with wood turning without too great an investment (in this case almost none) as I don't know whether it will suit me and I have so much to learn with furniture making that I have little time left for new skills.
So, if you are either already turning but need your own lathe or rearing to go so this machine fills a burning need for you I won't stand on perceived protocol. On the other hand if it just a mild interest for you then I am keen to have it.
Let me know - either on forum or PM and we will work it out to the satisfaction of all.
Regards
David

Hi John,
Thank-you. I am not a super-stickler but was a bit surprised more than anything else, so no angst from me over this. I have now corresponded with Fields and I think that he will make more immediate use of the lathe than I will so that makes him the better beneficiary. I have let him know that. If he changes his mind though I remain ready and willing to take it off your hands!
Enjoy the forums and Merry Christmas
Regards
David
