I have a number of spare bolts from various sources, the sizes set out below (some are from disassembled saws):
From this it seems that for most saw screws around, you need 5/32 and 7/32 drills. Others will have more data to addSpare Saw Nut Dimensions (minor diameter*) type of handle inch fraction small UK handle late 20th C cheap backsaw 0.194 3/16 S&J medallion - slotted early 20th C square shank handsaw 0.156 5/32 WS split nut late 19th C handsaw 0.142 9/64 Sandvik 1960s (major diameter) plastic handle handsaw 0.247 1/4 Disston 12 1896-1917 (a few of these) handsaw 0.206 13/64 split nuts UK backsaw? 0.156 5/32 split nuts UK early backsaw 0.120 1/8 split nuts UK early ? 0.149 5/32 S & J slotted handsaw 0.211 7/32 From Ray group buy 1/2" (Wenzloff?) 0.158 5/32 Disston 1960s backsaw 0.210 7/32 S & J slotted Spearior dovetail 0.210 7/32 E Henry & Co slotted dovetail 0.151 5/32 * minor diameter is the screw shaft that goes through the plate

Just another data point...
The Lie-Nielsen Saw Screws are a few thou under 3/16 (0.184) I note that they haven't got the square anti-rotation shoulder. But at $5 each they are good value.
The screw head is 7/16. And the overall length is 7/8.

Hi Ray,
I notice that Lie Nielsen sell both "Split Nut & Bolt Pair" for the Dovetail saw and "Slotted Bolt & Nut Pair" with the Tenon Saw, do you know what the difference is?
Links here:

I'm not 100% certain but the split nut from the dovetail saw has the slot in the nut, and the Tenon saw has the slot in the bolt head. I also think the tenon saw has raised domed heads where the dovetail is flush finish. I tried googling the images to try and confirm but can't find a reasonable image.
Maybe someone with the saws can confirm.

Hi Dale, Hiroller,
I'm not sure, but that sounds correct... Josh has more than a few LN saws, so I'll go look in his toolbox
Here's a picture of the ones I bought.

Ok I raided Josh's toolbox... The larger LN saws have domed heads and the smaller ones are split nuts... and I discovered the little saw that IanW made.... I might have to reclaim that!

There is a third type of course and that's the medallion screw ( sometimes called label screw )

Hi,
Thanks for the prompt update.
One more question, do the various LN saw handles have the same thickness?
Thanks.

Hi Dale,
Nice! just be a bit wary when you are unpacking the coil, I use a couple of quick release clamps to stop it from unwinding... it is a big roll of spring steel after all...
