Geez, Paul, ya must've been truly desperate to enlist the other half's help! First, you have to be prepared for the smug superiority when they find it (which they nearly always do, the term 'having a boy look' didn't come from nowhere), then the implied obligation that you will now have to do something like spend a morning shopping together, in return.....

In future, just call me & place an order for a spare! I might've tried a few lines like 'absent-minded old git' or similar, but I think you'd have quickly detected a lack of sincerity, since I'm still smarting over that brand new 4.5mm brad-point bit I managed to lose a couple of weeks back, the very first time I went to use it.

Getting the recesses for the bolt heads & nuts at the right depth can certainly be a challenge. Having done one or two handles, I've gotten pretty slick at judging it by eye, but I sometimes have to go back & drill a fraction more out, which I do with great care. The bolt hole in the centre removes the resistance caused by the centre point & incomplete cutters of the Forstner bit & it will bite in & take out a thick shaving with virtually no pressure at all. I've wrecked more than one handle before by not paying enough attention. Next time, we'll taper the heads & nuts more so that the counter-sinks don't need to be such a precise size to match. Live & learn!

Fitting the spine is the very last job I do on assembly. As you've discovered independently, you need to be able to take it on & off the blade several times during the process of fitting everything together. I find it easier to tooth, set & sharpen the bare blade, too.

    Cheers,
    IW

    Ian

It was an emotional battle of epic proportions: Do I drag you kicking and screaming out of saw making retirement thus laying you open to the ridicule of, mentioning no names, Simplicity et al or do I humble myself before SWMBO and have to compromise my independence? Fortunately, I found the offending nut myself ( I thought that SWMBO would be good at that, which was partly why I enlisted her services) and my liability was significantly reduced. As I said before, a couple of glasses of wine were apparently sufficient.

The spine really is a treat with the kerf sawn by a slitting saw. All my previous back saws have had an existing folded spine which required considerable "encouragement" to slide onto the plate. I really was glad I did not have to do that.

I have a few days at work so probably not too much going on for the moment apart from the occasional frivolous comment (that's from others: Not me ).

    Regards
    Paul

A no-brainer, me old china. We can manage the insults of each other, with no permanent scars, but it takes much more courage than I possess to face the potential scorn or sarcasm of our significant others! My respect for your intestinal fortitude has soared.

As you say, all's well that ends well, but it was nip & tuck - what if you hadn't been the one to spot it first.....

    Cheers,

I’m not sure what to think regarding the last two posts.
    Possibly a good thing.
Especially being a simple fellow amongst those with a much better vocabulary then my mere simple self,
This is the thread about a bloke making a couple of saws ain’t it.

    Cheers the simple fellow[emoji6].

I take your point. Hardly bears thinking about, but I got away with it.

Don't feel left out, Matt - we rely on you to bring some simple sanity and keep this thread on track....

Now, what were you doing when you lost your nut, Paul......??

Somehow I suspect that Matt is overwhelmed by the task. It's not an easy job you have set him.

    Cheers,
The thread title does include the word "crazy."

I was getting down to the nuts and bolts of the matter! When I thought I had lost the nut I nearly did my nut!

    Doug,
That is excellent nearly fell of my horizontal position.
But I’m also not seeing that being a problem, maybe because of my half full not half empty orientation[emoji6].

A slightly frustrating, but full day. It started off ominously with SWMBO asking if I would be working on the office desk .

I advised that was not my plan for the day as I was putting in a big effort on the all important saws. When I realised, being the observant and intuitive male I am, that this was not well received, I added that I planned to devote the rest of the week to the desk. So now you realise that this will be most of the contribution for this week.

The back saws are fundamentally assembled.

    P1040348.jpgP1040349 (Medium).JPGP1040350 (Medium).JPG

and the rip and crosscut hand saws were put together also. Time was getting on as you can see by the light.

    P1040358 (Medium).JPGP1040359 (Medium).JPG

I have made a modification to the saw screws to enable them to be pulled into and seated into the timber more easily:

    P1040355 (Medium).JPG

The original profile is above and the modified version below. I have tapered the screw head and the nut. The nut I have buffed on the bench grinder, but the screw head I have deliberately left with the grinding marks. My rationale is that I am quite happy for the head of the screw to jam, but I want the nut to rotate freely so that got polished up. I will still have to remove the handles and adjust the depth of the countersink holes as only the Silky Oak was soft enough that the screw would pull in as it was tightened.

The reason I said that the day was frustrating was each time I looked at a handle I would see more hairline cracks or some other defect. Grrrrr.... In a way it is fortunate they are mine as I will be able to live with the blemishes. Hopefully the finish will either fill or hide the smaller issues and the larger defects I will proudly proclaim are character!

I am looking forward to putting some "finish" on the handles as despite them all being very different timbers, they all look so similar at the moment, with the possible exception of the Gidgee.

Paul, get some oil on them asap, I've found a good soaking with a penetrating type finish like Danish oil will usually arrest that surface cracking many of our hardwoods are so prone to...

That's good to know Ian and I suspect many of the fine cracks will swell back up too. It hasn't helped being so dry here as there has undoubtedly been further shrinkage. I just have to finish off hand sanding of the tricky bits first.
