Hi Ron
Push or pull
Just kidding.
I like a longer handle for puliing - ala Japanese saws.
When it comes to pushing, as with a Western gent saw, what is important is something to push against. I like the lower (smallest) grip on the left best for a thumb to rest against (I also like that it is not over-decorated). However I would want a slightly more bulbous end that may be used nestled in the palm.

I would naturally gravitate towards the middle picture one.
It has more shape.
And too me that feels more comfortable in my hands I've turned file handles similar and I like the curve to grip.
I also appreciate something to push my thumb up against.
Cheers Matt

Thank you for the thoughts. As mentioned most of these can be altered. The middle examples can be made shorter to the same size roughly as the hickory one below it. There is also a longer ( 9" ) version of the middle ones that has not been made. One thing I have found is the max and min dia. of these need to be able to be varied. A 1.25" dia. for example is a good grip dia. for most average hands, while a 1.375" better for larger hands. Of course there are always exceptions. Soft curves are key to comfort over time when in use. Hence my western saws rarely have those "crisp" lines some speak of. That also means more rasping on my part.
What you don't see is what makes these better than most on the market now. ( biased opinion, of course ) Interchangeable handles, and replaceable parts to some extent. The rest I won't go into here.
By the way Derek. I do have a pull saw made, but I have not come to a conclusion on it. Trying different filings, etc. ( When I have time ) I have also always had three different sizes of handles, but your previous ( not so complementary comment ) about my short gent saws helped spur me to re design them to some extent. It bugged me. It's an OCD thing. Fortunately I have some ADHD so they balance out. I had to re tool the existing handles ( all 60 of them ) to accommodate the newer design. 10 of them hit the trash can. Oh well. I may never re coup my cost on these. But at least I will have a plethora of choices for my own saws. I happen to like Gent saws, both dove tail and carcass. Larger saws need a pistole grip handle in my opinion. ( another biased opinion )
I have another tool coming that uses the same style handle. All things in time.
A batch of mid sized handles waiting to be customized. Variety is indeed the spice of life. ( And that's my advertisement for the day. )

Just a couple of finished Gents.IMG_3294.jpgIMG_3299.JPGIMG_3306.JPG
First one: Infused tinted resin quilted maple. Custom request. Second: Size regular infused tiger maple. Last one is claro walnut, size large. The tiger and walnut are 10" x 1.75" x 0.015" plate x 18 ppi rip. The first one is 0.020" x 2.25" x 12". No epoxy, replaceable plates, replaceable handles, etc. Not much to say otherwise.
Best wishes.
