Carbatec are now carrying Fisch, which are Austrian, and by all accounts pretty good, and $125 is not too bad, esp considering the prices they used to charge for Colts when they carried them. Limited range of sizes though (in the usual 5mm increments). They also carry CMT brand tungsten tipped FBs in a much better range of sizes, but they are pretty pricey. Be aware that TT will generally not get as sharp as tool steel (yielding cleaner entry and exit wounds), but most who have the CMTs seem to like them.

I'll be bringing a range of decent ones (13 sizes between 20 and 30mm, plus a 1/2") so given that size is not critical for cutting out waste there should be a few to go around.

A note on saw sets. Somax Blue and Eclipse 77 seem to be the best. But note not all Eclipse 77 are the same the hammer width the anvil has differences as well. The finer hammer is preferable for the size saws we are looking at. You can file the hammer down if you require. Ideally you should have a range of saw sets for differing TPI.

Goodo, I won't bother to pack any Forstners, then, I think they should be well-represented!

We will also need a couple of different types of 5mm bits for the bolt holes. I use a brad-point or sharp HSS twist drill bit for the handle, and a carbide-tipped bit for the saw blade. I'll bring a couple of these, and see how they hold up - the type I've been using don't last much more than 40 or 50 holes in saw plate, & less if you aren't careful, but I've got a new type to try, so I'll be interested to see how it goes. To mark out the saw plate for drilling, I 'dry' assemble the blade & spine, then lightly spin an ordinary HSS twist drill in the bolt hole (so we need one or two of those). That makes enough of a mark that you can see where to lightly centre-punch for the carbide drill to follow.

Dale, or someone - don't forget to pack a few pieces of suitable scrap for backing when drilling. Hardwood is best, of course, especially when drilling the saw plate.

Hand drills for waste removal might work, but they will need to be drills with some serious grunt to drive larger diameter Forstners through She-oak. Forstners are really for drill press use, because they need a fair amount of pressure to keep them cutting cleanly, but some of you may have the right physique to keep a 1" Forstner going. With a bit of organisation, we should manage to keep things moving along.

Brett - I will need to post some stuff ahead, it's just a question of how much. Fortunately, I don't need much personal stuff, because what I'll be doing for the week following the w'shop doesn't involve suits or other forms of fancy dress. I could easily get by with a toothbrush, & a coupla changes of undergear, but I've learnt the hard way that I have to bring a set of clothing suitable for everything from heatwaves to blizzards, when I go to that part of the world!

If you have a sawset, I would suggest you bring it along for sure. You'll soon discover if the plunger is of a suitable size or not (as Dale says, they vary, possibly because people like us have already decided they required modification!). Each sawset feels different to use, my two 77s are like chalk & cheese, so it's better to use your own & get used to it, it helps you get a more consistent set.

    Cheers,
    IW

Ok, 5mm bits and HW scrap added to the list and I'll bring a fully charged Makita hand drill and spare battery - plenty strong enough for forstners in She Oak.

I will probably fly down but will bring most of the rasps and files required.
I'm not sure what type the saw nuts are but there is no mention of screwdriver or split nut driver yet!

IanW is making the splt-nut style for us.

Can you advise what width slot you make? So we can possibly get some saw nut drivers made up.

The slot is about 0.8mm wide. You can turn any old cheap blade driver of suitable width into a split nut model in about a minute or less, but just for fun, I'll make a few of these from some nice scraps of wood and bring them along:

At the end of the day, we'll have a draw for them.....

One of the forum members Pagie has posted Emerald Vic to South of Brisbane next week in WOODWORK FORUMS MEMBERS TRANSPORT

I was wondering maybe he can transport some stuff back for down for the workshop, like some of the extra wood on his return.
