Have any of you good people case hardened any tools that you found didn't hold an edge?

Case hardening an edge isn't likely to work well or for very long if at all. The case is typically not too deep so sharpening the just hardened tool would remove the hard layer leaving the soft steel exposed.
Innovations are those useful things that, by dint of chance, manage to survive the stupidity and destructive tendencies inherent in human nature.

Hi Kate, how did you go forging a carving gouge? There is some nice info on this very subject in Weygers' book The Complete Modern Blacksmith. I have followed his direction to make various chisels but not the socket type, just tanged ones.
Look forward to seeing the result. 😊
Cheers

When repurposing cheap chisels into carving tools - normalize first. Grind whatever shape, then harden and temper....
I have rehardened many cheap Chinese chisels... Quite a few won't harden to any useful degree.... Toss those. The rest seem to harden best quenched in brine - very few Chinese chisels harden quenched in oil. Only harden the last 1" or so to help combat warp.
Good cheap oil hardening chisel for your experiments..
1. Old cheapie plastic handle Marples.
2. Cheapie new production Great Neck brands including new Buck Brothers are fantastic steel stock that hardens very nicely when quenched in oil. This would be my choice for home made carving tools - if only because the "Raw Material" can be bought fairly cheap in the local BORG...
