I'm really getting sick of all this crap in an otherwise serious thread.

Put the pancake on the foily then eat the cat. Simple.

And if anyone had even bothered to do a search on the subject first...

Not picking on Gumby, and attempting to hijack this thread by being seriouis for a moment, did anyone spot that the book I was referring to was George Orwell's 1984?

Just curious - it's not important

And there I was thinking you were referring to Farenheit 451 (Ray Bradbury?)

    Yep,
realised you were refering to the good ole days like in Orwells' soothsaying tome, obviously showing how free society could've been before all brands of government got really really serious on controlling our lives, information, decisions and rewriting history at each election.

The idea of spy tv has become so ubiquitous that I often forget that Orwell came up with it. Anyhow, as an indictment of Stalinism 1984 is a fine piece of work, but if you want a horrifying prophecy of the future of western civilisation, go no further than Huxley's Brave New World. Pay particular attention to the preface to the 1953(?) edition. Scary.

Btw, just kidding about the "crap" and "search". I haven't clocked up enough posts to be self-righteous. Give me time.

    Beautiful day in Melbourne.

    Regards,
    Rusty.

Actually, they have a very good idea what time you are home. Ever had a phone call recently when there was noone at the other end? Didn't think too much of it? The latest trick is they use computer dialing, and ring a number of times at different times of the day to determine the best time to ring to have the phone answered. (And it can distinguish between answer machines and human). Over a period of time, they work out statistically when the call will be successful, and that's when you get the phone call from India, or Pakistan, or whereever.

Don't know why thieves haven't worked out this is useful software, but then I guess they are not interested in having to do any work......

If this sounds a bit far-fetched, you should hear what the radio stations are complaining about with similar software - they get flooded with calls by autodialing software for their dial-in competitions - not hard being the 9th person if your computer has flood-called 100 times in seconds.

    It's a pretty crappy world.
