Same thought crossed my mind when I heard it on the news this morning on the way to work.

Hopefully unfortunate incidents like this can be used in a positive sense to educate others so it is not repeated.

Most people try to work safely but maybe there are hazards that are not obvious that we could look out for if we were informed.

I sit in a technical lab during the day working with wires and software and supporting technicians in the field.

What's worse is the number of 'replantations' the surgeon has estimated his surgeons perform each year - 30 to 40.

And this is only 1 hospital in 1 of our major cities.

Rationaly the figure will never be zero as there will always be fools who play with explosives, etc. Still, I find that there is something seriously wrong with that many people, for whatever reason, ending up with permanent life altering injuries.

Perhaps one of our importers can do the sums on making this sort of technology available:

Actually, the surgeons at Bernard O'Brien Institute for Microsurgery (the guys that did this) are Australian (and world) leaders in the field. They have patients flown in from all over the place. To tell the truth, I'm not sure if there's any other group in Australia that does this. So the statistics (while still bad) are not quite as mind-boggling as all that.

I wasn't aware of that. Oh well, I'm often accused of ommitting peripheral, irrelevant facts to make figures look worse than they are in the pursuit of a cause

A little birdie tells me there is a bit more to this one than meets the eye.

Ask yourself when was the last time (prior to this) you heard of someone accidentally cutting off a hand on a drop saw. Then try and envisage a way that an accident like this could actually happen.

I've been wondering the same thing myself - it wouldn't be that easy to do on purpose let alone by accident :confused:

If it wasn’t an accident, then I hope the person or persons are properly treated for more than just microsurgery.

If it was an accident, I suggest the person gives up woodwork and contacts Frank Spencer and Mr Bean for a family reunion or a new film.
