    Default More Stupidity

There have been reports in the American press of people putting sun screen SPF 30 or more in their eyes to view the eclipse. I don't know if that is 'Fake News' or not. The really scary part, fake or real, is that there are people that would try to do that.

Sounds reasonable to me....you put sunscreen in your eyes and it hurts so much that you can't open your eyes until the eclipse is over. What's wrong with that?

I think it's less stupidity and more general ignorance.

I'm not sure about SPF30, better to go with something stronger.
Innovations are those useful things that, by dint of chance, manage to survive the stupidity and destructive tendencies inherent in human nature.

Actually it appears that no one is really that stupid.

It really is a very stupid idea. The SPF (of any strength) would only stop the UV component - the rest of the visible will still blind you.

    just follow the "logic"

we all "know" that it's the UV rays that cause sun burn -- i.e. burn your skin
Sun screen protects your skin from burning -- i.e. from the UV rays
QED sunscreen will prevent your retinas suffering sun burn -- i.e. blindness

If you have ever had the misfortune to see the x-ray images of what some humans (I use that noun in only a very technical sense) have inserted into their bodies in places these objects have no place being; you would not be the least bit surprised!

Recently I heard Elon Musk (Tesla, SpaceX etc) being concerned that we (humans) may become extinct because we are a species bound to the fate of the one planet we reside on. To be honest, I think it is arrogant to assume that we are somehow (in the galactic scheme of things) worth preserving!
