    Default Unhappy with Taunton (again).

Some time ago I had a whinge about being bombarded with 'free shipping' offers from the Taunton Press. Problem is that free shipping does not apply to overseas customers.
Now Taunton Press are offering prizes in a free 'sweepstakes' - but guess what when you read the small print? Does not apply here. I think it is a very insensitive way to treat customers, some of whom have paid $ hundreds for books and magazines over the years.
Sad thing is that I contacted them and they apologised - but they keep doing it. Perhaps labelling their e mails as spam and blocking them is the solution.

    Typical.

Wouldn't hurt once in a while for them to offer a competition to overseas subscribers as we also pay a premium for their product and in many cases the prizes on offer tend to be donated by advertisers rather than purchased by the company running the competition.

I have always though it should be easy to sort their customer lists by e-mail suffix - e.g '.au' , '.ca', '.uk' etc. Heck, I could do it on my old Apple IIe with Appleworks V.1.

I have written to Amazon who do much the same thing on this issue, and got precisely nowhere, so don't expect Taunton or any of the US based companies to take any notice of you - someone with a brain, like Lee Valley, seem able to cope tho'.

    You're lucky
I get the emails twice - to each of my home email addresses. I asked them to delete one and guess what? Yep I still get two emails

Since this thread got resurrected I'll add a little warning.

Taunton's web site is a recurring subscription, and there is no way to cancel the recurrence other than cancelling your subscription, which takes effect immediately.

I now have diarised notes everywhere, telling me to cancel my subscription just before the next renewal.

From an administrative point of view, I can understand why they don't - legally, if you are running a 'sweepstake for the promotion of trade' in Australia, you need to get a permit - and not just one for 'all Australia' but each state has its own rules, permit fees and hoops to go through.

And when you think that the Australian market is only 7% the size of the US one - it's a lot of extra work for a not very large segment of your market (especially a market that does not have a lot of the brands advertised in your magazine).

I'd highly doubt you'd need a license for a competition for Australia for a competition held outside of Australia but I could be wrong.

Sure the Australian market is small and they could easily not care, but why operate that way?
