These Atlas machines use Zamac parts. Quite a risk if one cannot inspect in person from close-up. Parts first shrink, then crack.... until total decay sets in. Affects mainly parts made in the 40's, 50's and 60's (that is when these shapers were made). Google for zinc pest or zinc rot, like Zinc pest - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia or google foer Atlas lathes and Zamac.....
Please be very very concerned in this particular case. I would not recommend bidding too high

Damn thing must have have gold plated handles or something! I thought at $900 it was a touch over the top and bidding would end there.

Probably went so high because that's the only small shaper to ever be sold in Australia -- ok a real eBay timespender could maybe recall one or two others, but I've never seen them. The other options are a 12,000kg monster (there's one of them on eBay somewhere at the moment) or those Douglas shapers with the huge pulley sticking 6 foot out of their ars- oh yeah, "behind". So if you ever wanted a small shaper for a small workshop you would have had to bid on that one. I pulled out at $360.

I was contemplating bidding if it hung around the $400 mark, i didn't think it would get much over $500. There are at least 2 owned by forum members, Mike and Andre. They are about.
And my big boned girl only weighs 2.2T or so

This was past my budget. But since it had the original legs and the vise and the clapper box and even the proper shaper toolholder, and did not look worn out on the pics, it was probably worth what it sold for.
Then again, for that money, one could of consider importing a small old shaper from the US or Europe. For a little more, one may even find a fully restored one.
