What happens to the prices when the supply of ex-school Douglas shapers dries up ? Is there an endless supply of these machines in good cond. out there ? I'd say that most of the examples used in industry / engineering machine shops , for years of everyday use , would be stuffed/worn out . If you don't grab a half decent one now, even for a seemingly higher price than most think is a good deal , you may end up paying more later on rebuilding a worn out example . Who knows what will happen in the future . At the moment, there are quite a few good ones around , but that is because of ' timing ' , the schools dont want em .

Hi James, I see you have been a member here a while, but welcome anyway.
It's always the same when you want one they are expensive, then when you have one they are cheap.
If I see one around your way I will give you a yell.

Hi all,I purchased a couple of items from this eBay seller, and in a conversation with him was asked what this item was.
LATHE METAL WORKING MACHINIST TOOL??? - V Block Clamp ??? | eBay
I said that it looked like an adjustable "V"Block, although I have never seen or heard of them before. Was I correct, or is it something else with some other function? The vendor did say that it came from a deceased estate, and may have been home brewed. It is a bit shy of hold down points for milling, unless used with a magnetic chuck IMO, but the workpiece may have been able to be held satisfactorily by other devices I guess, in many applications anyway. Cheers,
Rob.
Its a planner gage, its for setting tool heights.
I'd say the sliding part around the wrong way.(might make more sense to you then)
Stuart
p.s. google images will give you the idea
Hi Rob,
I posted a few photos of my gauge in a thread started by Stu - https://www.woodworkforums.com/f65/st...5/#post1303779
Should give you an idea of their use.
Bob.
Hi Stuart and Bob, Yes of course, I should have recognized it but I was thrown with the sliding anvil?? being around the wrong way. I had not seen your post before Bob, and had often wondered just how a planer gauge was used, so it has been a good lesson for me as well. As has been frequently mentioned, your photos are of magazine or catalogue quality and beautifully illustrated some common uses for a planer gauge, many thanks to both of you fine gentlemen.:2tsup:
Too much for me (in Melbourne) as he said price is firm, but nearer to you.

I guess we'll find out, although this is a much bigger machine... Radial Arm Drill, Arboga Maskiner (Sweden) Model ER125S approx 500mm throat Auction (0013-5006398) | GraysOnline Australia

That's the model I have - paid $400 for it from a dealer. Paint job was a ghastly orange with overspray everywhere. He bought it at auction, doubled his money in 2 days without having to do any work to it as opposed - he said - to maybe 20+ hours work and an asking price ~$1500.
We were both happy with the deal. Can still see some orange paint on it, it's rattly and probably needs a teardown but it drills holes fine so what the hell.

Maybe, but not everyone bidding on these auctions are home market buyers, I can see that a decent size Arboga radial arm drill like that one would be handy in a lot of general engineering / fabrication workshops.

With buyers premium and gst that $569 becomes $710, I'd have thought that's a nice little bargain in anyone's terms. Even twice that price, it would still be good value for a drill press.
