PDW: how tall is the Hercus casting you have there? I mean base to centre height... My Van Norman cylindrical grinder doesn't have one and what I've found so far is too tall.

    Cheers,
    Joe
I'll do some measurements when I get back from Agfest. Might have a home for the HS & TS castings already to the man I sold the old Hercus lathe to but if not and you're interested, fine with me. They're taking up space and I'll never use them.

I can definitely see a J&S angle dresser there, not sure about a tailstock.

I think I can see what looks like the side of the tailstock, but it's doesn't appear to have the riser block, in any case I'd think you would want to get rid of the risers anyway.

And no, I haven't borrowed Stuart's super powers, although he did call in here this morning

The angle dresser is on the other side, I'm not sure what that is with the arrow.

You may be right Ray, it does look like the tailstock possibly with the lever/handle removed.

ahh OK.... It looked like a diamond stick pointing out the top, so I thought it was the angle dresser..

If it is the tailstock like you say it may be disassembled...

I know little about what the grinder parts look like from fuzzy pictures... But it does look like the tailstock now with the handle removed... Going by other pictures on the net..

So the angle dresser is the bit that I thought was the original base for the workhead, with the handle sticking out of it..

    Hi RC,

To my eye, It looks like the tailstock, just going on the shape of the tailstock casting in this picture.

    Jones&shipman1300.jpg

I'd hazard a guess that the machine isn't set up to use the tailstock anyway, with the riser blocks, it looks like the riser blocks have been installed for internal grinding on something larger diameter.

What that means is that if you want to use the tailstock, the riser blocks will have to come off, and then re-align the head and tailstock.

    Regards
    Ray

PS. Ok, I see your picture shows the same tailstock..

It appears to have the tailstock but a visit would confirm. Jones and shipman stuff is "top shelf" and generally very good but if you do need anything it's $$$$$$$$$ plus so a visit to make sure lead screw etc all match the overall condition.

Yea I have decided not to buy this grinder... There are a few issues with transportation, like my 540 grinder the hydraulic oil has to be drained as the tank has no top otherwise it sloshes everywhere... Along with that it has a counterweight that should be disconnected, lest it break free..

Other items the seller has for sale but not listed if you want to contact him are a Rockwell hardness tester... He also has a 340mm Tesa Microheight..

The surface plates he has two of, one of a Grade A 900 X 600, he did not think it had any chips in it..

On Machines4U there are a couple of modern Jones & Shipman 540's, not too badly priced is any good...
