I've been watching this one, not with any intention to bid though.
For that price, on a machine that has very obviously been repainted (at least it's not pink, though) I'd want to have a close personal inspection and run the thing under power. The seller can't provide a decent set of pictures, even.

You *do* realise that they can ask you to take a drug test before going onto a wharf, right? So, whatever you've been smoking, might be time to stop......
Back to the lathe, looking it up on Tony's site shows it has a small spindle bore (bigger than a Holbrook though). D1-4 is good, 3 speed 3 phase motor bad IMO - too bloody complicated when a small set of gears would have done. Sounds like a very similar drive system to the Holbrook actually, maybe more of the incestuous breeding of UK tool makers before their demise.
This one has a TA which is desirable. I still think it's way overpriced though. Maybe $3K value if it's in excellent mechanical condition.
Interestingly it makes me appreciate my Chipmaster design more - except for the Kopp drive but at least mine does work well. I'd swap the Chipmaster out but probably only for a 10EE and there's little chance of that happening.

Not only is the drive system the same as the C10's, some of the parts from the earlier machines look like they came from Holbrooks spare parts shelving. It does have the extra 1/4" bore, but still has the stupid gap between the top and next fastest speeds. It is less powerful too.

So - worth nothing like the asking price in your eyes, either.
A pretty nice CVA sold for less than $3500 a couple years back. That one I was tempted to bid on. Basically a 10EE with a simpler drive system. The 10EE drive system(s) are marvels at what they do, but I don't like the complexity. I understand gears.....

Since I paid less than a 1/4 for the C10 there is no way I'd pay the asking price. If it was in as new condition maybe, but new paint and one photo, I'd want to have a real good look before even considering.
Actually I dont think I'd pay that much for any lathe. There is just no need to, patients and acting fast will get you a good machine at a fraction of the cost.

Ha, I just noticed it is from a dealer. My rule of thumb is they sell things for twice what the machine is worth. At $2250 it may be a good deal. Still out of my tight ar5ed price range though.

I ran a 10EE up to $4500 a few years back, but that was a year when I'd earnt a tonne of money and needed some tax deductions. Someone else still wanted it more so I let it go. As you say, there's always another machine out there.
Yeah I had noticed it was a dealer selling it, so I agree, overpriced by at least a factor of 2. These guys don't seem to learn, the man at Centurion Machinery used to do the same thing. OTOH the tissuescars man lists things at moderately expensive but reasonable prices, has good stuff and from what I've heard is very cooperative about dropping things off at freight depots etc. Funny thing that his sales seem way higher......

Too many red flags.. Dulux Restoration, Seller has only one prior ebay transaction? Who drops $4500 on just one picture? In fair to middling condition it would be worth a closer look.... Oh.. and it's not pink?

I don't know about the spindle bore, Tony says the swing is 2" and it can take 3" between centers....

For anyone considering the J&S 1400 grinder on ebay... It has the plain babbit bearing spindle that uses ultra thin Velocite 3 oil... Not what you would call a repairable item if the spindle is worn out...
Light red, the colour of choice for the discerning man.
