Damn it! A bloke's mates are meant to keep him out of trouble and away from temptation!

"Hmm. Never heard of one of those before"
"The description sounds good - and I reckon with a bit of a squeeze you might even be able to get a 40 taper on there"
"So that's who's selling it. Hmm. Just around the corner too. Would probably fit in the boot easily."
"Can't hurt just to call the seller and hear a little bit about it"
"Oh? you'll take less than the asking price?"
"Was only used as a display piece?"

Anyway, the story given to me was that the seller imported it from NZ and used it as a display piece in the show room of his engineering business. He had his fitters take it apart and clean it up, but was amazed at how nice the ways were.
It doesn't have much more than you can see. It was originally a belt drive unit on the oak bench (as Ewan has so kindly pointed out in his post), so either needs that recreated or some form of drive unit fashioned. With a small three phase motor and a VFD I think that would be the better option. The more critical part is the accessories to go with it. At the very least a tailstock but to do all this properly there are steadies, drive dogs, driven spindles and the list goes on.

    You guys...

Looks like there are at least 5 guy's on Ebay selling "offcuts" and I use the term loosely. There appears to be one guy in Sydney trading under a couple of Ebay names.

Well, its not entirely a case of scrap iron at $900 per tonne. It's been well-kept out in a paved courtyard, rather than in the bottom paddock on a farm. Consequently, the ways are only rusted - there's no moss or lichen growing on them yet. With any luck, the chuck isn't actually rusted onto the mandrel. It's also well-presented, in pieces. The photos aren't too grainy and lo-res. Take a punt, $900 isn't much - actually a very reasonable starting price I would have thought. Should see this climb pretty high in the next few days.

    May have actually been rebuilt...

    Maybe i'm wrong... just saying

I'm with you Jayson, it looks a very acceptable paint job to me, no paint on machined precision surfaces or even pulley grooves from what I can see, but as always Caveat Emptor, and of course you still need a top slide and the cabinet would have been handy too. The BIN price doesn't look too bad if you can locate the needed bits, and the mechanicals stack up as described.

Can't agree with you there Gunnaduit, I think that the price is high by a factor of about 9. If he gets an offer of $100, he should just grab it and run.
I don't disagree that it is rebuildable, but it will take a lot of work, and I hope that the internal bearings are in good nick, because replacements are likely to be spendy particularly in the headstock area.
The rust on the ways will come off easily using the electrolysis method, as will all the paint, but at least you will be able to see what you have got. Judging by the name it may have come from the same neck of the woods as Dean, Smith and Grace machines, I wonder if there was a connection.

Classic!! Yeah, you wouldn't get me paying more than $100 - that's if I wanted to risk the wife going off her head with that ending up somewhere near the back door of the shed. It's not even an iconic brand. RT, in a way you're more optimistic than me -- I just figured the ways were shot with the rust -- you think maybe electrolysis could bring them back.
