That's no good. I'm doing my best not to call the bloke, don't think I could explain to my wife how I ended up with a shaper in the garage.

They advertised it as a drill press?? Cheap, if you can lift it. Looked like it had some tooling - chuck on the table, maybe a dividing head?
Ben.
ps Welder, are you going to try for that shaper up here?

Hi,
I went back and had another look, pretty sure the drill chuck has been welded to the spindle. About the fourth last photo. If it's old Eastern European if you'd wonder if you could get modern tooling for it.
It's too big and uncertain for me. There was a Cinninatti (cant spell it properly) No 2 Milling machine with HEAPS of tooling and extras on ebay in Sydney last week for starting bid of $2000 and buy it price of $3200 (I think), lasted one night. I reckon that would of been a good buy.

Andre,
The dividing head with that mill looks to be a universal one, but I can't see any signs that the mill table is universal - this from a candle lit photo though. There is an extra handle on the right side of the table which puzzles me.
One thing to note though is the top speed - 640 rpm. If you want to run them efficiently it means you are limited to cutters 16mm or larger. It looks the sort of machine that would be at home in a structural steel fabricator's place. For home use I suspect it is too large and has not got the top speed that most would want (at that size it would be 3 phase as well I expect)

Hi Michael,
Isnt that handle the table(X) feed?(assuming I'm talking about the same handle)
Where did you get 650rpm from? I see 450rpm, which makes things even worse.
Still the dividing head is likely worth the starting price, though what do you do with the rest?

I think 640 is because I didn't look carefully enough (early morning, no glasses). Looking again I agree 450rpm.
The extra handle I'm talking about is mounted on the RH front of the table, at 90 degrees to the normal traverse handles. It might be a 'feature' so that the table can be traversed from the front?
As for the rest, scrap cast iron is not without value...
It might be possible to re-motor it and up the speed, but you'd really have to see the bearings first to see whether it were possible. I suppose you could put on a 2 hp motor and VFD on it so you could run off 240V, but if the table feed comes off the same motor you could lose a lot of spindle power
