Another Guess the Timber.
It’s another exciting round of guess that Timber type, with the winner having full boasting rights too all those participants who seem to care,
Was asked to cut this down for a local in Wedderburn today, an that is about my sum knowledge of what species it is.
The round is only about 180mm wide.
Cheers Matt.

Looks like Bay Leaf to me. What do the leaves smell like when torn?

I think Michael's suggestion is more likely, cava - Bay has thin & more elongate leaves with entire margins (I have one just outside my office door). Matt's tree has thick leaves with slightly toothed (dentate) margins and the fruits are more spherical than Bay fruits, which are more oval (at least in the pics I can find, our tree has never fruited because it is kept for culinary purposes & LOML gives it regular heavy haircuts).
The corky bark of Matt's tree is also quite unlike what's on our bay tree, so I lean to Rhamnus sp. rathger than Laurus, & if it's the former, it's a declared weed in some areas, so you've done a good deed, Matt...
Whatever it is, small, slow-growing shrubby trees often have interesting wood good for turning, so it's always worth salting such 'finds' down, imo. You can always chuck it in the fire if it turns out to be useless for anything else....
Cheers,IW
