    Default Species Identification Help Please

    Hello Timber Gurus,

I did a bit of gardening at Mum's house last weekend. I cut down a weed tree that I'm unfamiliar with and saved some of the trunk to play around with in the future. Any ideas on its name? Trunk, leaves and flowers.

That could be a Privet. If so you're right, it's a weed. No idea if the timber is good for anything though.

I use an App called “PictureThis”. I haven’t paid for it - you can bypass the fee and use it as a free App but you don’t get all the “bells and whistles”. It works well. My BIL owns a wholesale nursery and gave it the thumbs up when I was recently there.

Thanks Aldav. I think you're correct.

I did an internet search after you set me in the Privet direction. The resultant photos and descriptions are consistent with the tree I removed.

I'm not sure if the timber is any good either. Most articles I looked at were concerned with Privet's invasiveness and problem as a weed. I did not find any mention of its use in cabinetry or carpentry.

Any way, it's a new one to me. The most common weed tree I encounter (in metropolitan Perth) is the Brazilian Pepper tree. I understand Brazilian Pepper timber is used in industry in South America.

Thanks Lappa. I downloaded this app from the Apple App Store. It is free to use and evaluate for 7 days, then $39.99/year thereafter. Good to know it is out there and has positive reviews.

You dont need to pay the yearly fee - it’s an option but damn persistent I will post some screen shots later on how to get around the pay option. As I said earlier, it limits some features but the plant ID still works.

Okay. I'll have a look at your screen shots.

On an iPhone, the App will open in one of two ways - seems to be random..

First is a Dark screen with a “CONTINUE” button ( sorry, didn’t capture it but it is basically the same as the next screen)
Hit the “CONTINUE” button and this screen comes up

Simply choose the “Continue with limited edition” under the “CONTINUE” button

Second App method is as follows.
Launch the App and this screen comes up

Hit the “CONTINUE” button and the next screen comes up

Hit the “X” in the top RH corner of the screen and you are in.

Select “Identify” and take a photo of the plant/tree for ID.
