I’ve just finished making a pen , but no idea of the Timber type.
I’ve just finished turning this Sierra Style Pen, unfortunately the timber blank was labeled “North Queensland”
I don’t really think that is much help, I probably got the timber blank at a wood show and was probably in a bundle.
I really want to put it up for sale, but I can’t really say North Queensland. Lol
Any ideas, brains, trust
Cheers Sally

Not getting too many suggestions, Sally!
The trouble is, "Nth Qld" does contain one or two (thousand) species of trees & it could be any one of quite a few different & unrelated woods. Looking at the pics, I'd guess it's an Acacia of some sort, but I'd not go to court on that diagnosis. There are dozens of species of "Black wattle" up & down the east coast, many of which have woods that are similar, or overlap to such an extent they are impossible to distinguish with any confidence. I suggest if you called it "Acacia" it would be very hard to prove you wrong.
Nice pen, btw....
Cheers,IW

I would agree with Ian on this one. Because you are about to sell it and need the information you could call it "Sally Wattle". Yes there is a such a name. Sally Wattle is what Blackwood is called on the east coast ranges of Australia. True to say that it is a "general name" for this timber due to there being a huge number of species that get grouped together in this bunch. The colours that "Blackwood" species have range from near white to deep brown and anything in between. If you wanted to specifically find your pens lineage a DNA sample would probably be the only way
Good looking pen, what ever the timber is......make some moreJust do it!
Kind regards Rod

Another nice looking pen, Sally. One comment is that I prefer pics with the writing tip extended - this tip (pun intended) was from Penpal and my photos definitely look better. Sorry I can't help with timber type. I checked out my range, but nothing to match that. Hopefully Ironwood is will pick this up as he knows North Queensland timbers as well as anyone (and better than most). And for what it's worth, all my blanks are marked on the end with a code (CB for Coolabah Burl etc) and my code list now numbers around 100 (with a memory like mine it's essential )
Cheers, Gary

Even tyros who have been in the timber industry for many decades will admit to getting it wrong occasionally. We are blessed with so many beautiful commercial and non-commercial species, many thousands in fact, so blessed that many species are marketed under the one "trade name" because they have similar properties etc. QLD has some 750 or so "standard trade names" for commercial timbers alone.
"Acacia" has become a somewhat over used term to describe the wood used in numerous imported low quality wooden items so I would go with "Sally Wattle" purely to distance our items from the mass produced junk.
If / when you come across a timber expert who really can identify it accurately - thank them for their knowledge, and experience in helping you to ID it.Mobyturns
