Default How to build a wooden planter box?

Hi everyone, I am new to this forum and I have a question about building a wooden planter box. I have a small backyard, and I want to grow some herbs and vegetables in a raised bed. I have some basic tools and skills, but I need some guidance and advice on how to build a wooden planter box that is sturdy, attractive, and functional. I hope you can help me out.
Some details about my project and my plan are:

    • I want to build a wooden planter box that is 4 feet long, 2 feet wide, and 1 foot high. I want to use cedar wood for the box, as it is rot-resistant, insect-resistant, and weather-resistant. I also want to add some drainage holes and a liner to the box, to prevent waterlogging and soil loss.
    • I plan to use 1x6 boards for the sides and bottom of the box, and 2x2 posts for the corners and supports. I also plan to use a circular saw, a drill, a hammer, and some screws and nails for cutting, drilling, and assembling the wood pieces. I also have some clamps, a tape measure, a square, and a pencil for measuring and marking the wood pieces.
    • I want to finish the wooden planter box with a clear coat of wood sealer, to protect the wood and enhance its color and grain. I also want to fill the box with a good quality potting mix, and plant some herbs and vegetables, such as basil, parsley, lettuce, and tomatoes.

I would appreciate any advice or tips from anyone who has experience or knowledge in building wooden planter boxes. Thank you very much for your time and attention. 😊

    Hi there Amberc28,
I'm not sure if you plan to have a wooden base or will the liner just be held in place by the sides of the box.
Would this liner sit right on the ground or on a base if you make it.
I reckon either would work but just making the walls to hold the liner that sits on the ground would be easier and cheaper and probably work just as well.
Bearing in mind that moving it would be pretty much impossible as it would weigh a lot.
Also maybe have along the sides three uprights that would reduce any bulging of the sides as the potting mix as i said will be heavy and could bend outwards.
Plus a foot deep would be heaps of soil and for what you want to grow maybe some light gravel or scoria would help drainage and reduce amount of soil to buy. 8- 10 inches would be heaps for those herbs etc
Or you could even make two boxes of 2 feet by 2 feet each

    Anyway, just some thoughts.
    Good luck

    Frank
