Fingers and hammers.
They just don't get along all that well. For some reason hammers alway come out on top, literally.
Just joking, but these are my tools: Pinky and ringy have nice new plastic PIP joints. Index and second finger have PIP joints fused. A little later the index finger DIP joint started playing up so I had that fused as well. While he was at it (not literally) I asked the surgeon to break the index fused PIP joint, and pin it at a more acute angle to make it more useful. The surgeon advised me I'd never be able to pick my nose again, but I decided I could live with that.
Unfortunately, the finger didn't fuse like it was supposed to in six weeks, so constant use straightened it out and then it fused, took nearly three months to fuse. On the plus side, my nose isn't blocked anymore.
