Old 15 inch thickness planer servicing
Good day from a sunny South Africa and apologies for my bad English, it's only my second language..
I recently purchased an old Martlet 15 inch thicknesser, it's in good working condition but I want to replace all the bearings, etc before putting it into use. Whilst removing the infeed and outfeed rollers I noticed that the bearings/bushing on these very worn, on one side of the infeed roller shaft the old bearing/bushing had already scored the shaft quite substantially as can be seen on the attached photos. My worry is that there is going to be a slight bit of play with new bearing blocks installed.. Would this cause any issues like for instance uneven planing? Or should I just smooth the shaft with sandpaper and not worry about it?
If it's gonna cause issues I could probably take the rollers to an engineering shop and have them smooth out the shaft on a lathe and custom make new bearing/bushing blocks with the same diameter hole as the machined down shaft.
Alternatively I could order new rollers but parts are no longer available for this planer, although I am sure Jet parts would also fit but I will have to confirm this first.
Another question, what type of oil can I use in the gearbox?
Thanks gents.

Another thing I wanted to ask. How does one remove the two rollers on the bottom bed?

I tore down my Jet 15" and don't remember any issues with those bottom rollers. Have a search around and you should be able to find a Jet manual with disassembly instructions, tons of companies made that model and the only differences are very minor.
