    Default Barker double disc sander.

Looked at a Barker double disc yesterday.
Want to bring it home on my Falcon RTV one ton al tray ute.
Have correct spec truck tyres on ute.
    Need weight of the Barker.

Looked up Wadkin double and they are 950 kg.
Back when I took spare Wadkin discs down to Glen at the Lost Trades Fair in the family Impreza I
weighed them and from memory 100lb each.
So let’s say 100kg for two.
The Cast Iron tables must be 50kg each at least, so if I wanted to I could lower that weight to 750 kg.
Prefer not to take the tables off so might see if I can borrow a digital scale for the day I go pick up.
Does anyone know precisely what the Barker weighs?
I’ve never seen a Barker cattledog and McPherson don’t list weights in the specs they give.

I bought my own trailer now but before that I used to hire a flat bed car trailer with electric winch, the ramp and winch made it possible to collect machines where the seller had no forklift or any other way of lifting the machine.

    Which one is it?

Used barker 3 Phase Twin Disc Sander with overhead fluro light Disc Sanders in , - Listed on Machines4u - this looks about as heavy as the Wadkin
    or
Early LS Barker 18" Double Disc Sander - this couldn't be more than say 200 - 300kg

Thanks for that Nigel, Being a huge Foundry there is a wall mounted crane good for the smaller bits of kit and a large travelling overhead for up to 5 tons.
I moved a 500kg mill into the shed on Monday, used a hire gantry and the ute no probs.
When I picked up my JTA from Camoz I used a mates car trailer and a cumalong winch and my son’s muscles
A piece of thin steel is handy underneath to reduce friction when winching stuff.

    It’s the big mother Chas,
    30” discs as I remember.
Thats why I’m basing my guesstimate on the Wadkin twin disc.

Hi Henry, I've got 2 Barker catalogues.. 1940s and 1960s, both have your double disc sander, but no weights I'm affraid.... That said, l actually own one myself, and I'd guess the weight at around 750kg ..

Matty, Could you please copy and send me those pages on the double disc.
Do either of your catalogues have the Barker tilting arbor table saw that is in the McPhersons catalogue.
To me that would be the holy grail of Oz made woodworking machinery.

I had a rather sad Hyco that I passed onto mate and I’ve seen at least two version of that saw.
Can’t believe Woodfast never kept the last version going when they took on all the other Hyco stuff.
I guess by that date Cousins up here in Sydney was making the AGS for Wadkin.

I concur with with that weight and took the discs off to drop 100k.

Does either of your Barker sanders have top guards like Wadkin?
This sander doesn’t and I don’t remember seeing them on any others.

Hi Henry, no I'm affraid no sign of the elusive Barker tilting saw, but yes l know the one, very rare indeed. I'm yet to see one in the wild.
My Barker sander came from the now closed Holden workshops in Adelaide. The pattern shop l believe. Both discs have upper guards fabricated by Holden..
