bursgreen MZ band saw Mod two
I must admit i am a sucker for the look of old vintage electric motors. I find my self picking them up even if i don't have a use. This one is a Newman 50s vintage made in England 7.5 HP 550volts 3 phase. These 600 volts motors go cheap in Canada because that voltage is only industry .This one for $20 is typical . 3 phase motors go cheap but if there 600 volts you can not give them away . I'v got that voltage in the shop so they are useful to me and that the excuse I use to buy them .
Now the Bursgreen MZ is a direct drive saw meaning the bottom wheel is driven off the motor shaft. I always liked the look of the motor shroud on these bigger saws with the DD to protect the electric motor from falling wood off the tables. This Tannewitz GH is a fine sample of a motor shroud . In contrast the Bursgreen is very plain even the my Wadkin DR has one over its motor though its just a weldment i like what it adds in protection from wood and saw dust for the motor. A thread just on Vintage motor covers My be an interesting one.
With this in mind and this $20 Newman motor I went about to fab up a motor cover and to jackifie this little ship saw of mine . It tuned out that the the stador was pressed into an aluminum body of the motor housing and was a cooling bank for the iron core. Once I pulled the end bells I cut the housing/case away from the core to get what i needed to make the cover for the Bursgreen .

Jack,
What can I say.....as always, very impressive work!! I am glad you have gotten around to working on the MZ and sharing in on the Australian forum.
Cheers,
