Re flat leather belting, on the Metalwork forum one of the members was giving away and posting a stash of belting his work was throwing out.
He sent me up some stuff for my lineshaft.
Oxx and Bert from memory but just have a browse.
I have recently bought connectors here in Oz online from a mob down the ‘Gong.
I have a few presses for attaching these and a loan might be possible if you need one as I get up to Brissy a few times a year.

Hmm. I'd not considered using that style of switch to swap phases (I guess that's what comes of not being a sparkie ). I'd have thought there would have to be a fixed contact for the third phase - but then this was 70 - 90 years ago.

I had to have another look - thought the one set of contacts did both sides - but obviously not .

    Here's one I prepared earlier...

This one also has inbuilt fuses - otherwise it's probably got interchangeable parts with yours.

When I got it, it had some asbestos. Note that fluffy stuff in the fuse holder. Yours won't have that, but under the ceramic female contacts there'll be some asbestos sheet.

When dealing with asbestos, water is your friend - dust is your enemy. Be very careful.

I sat with a vacuum cleaner nozzle in the enclosure as I took it apart, to catch any fibres I disturbed. Then, after ziplock bagging the asbestos, used soap and running water to clean out the enclosure (and wash my hands - which apparently works for covid19 as well ).

You can paint (soak) the asbestos with PVC glue to contain the fibres - but better still, I was able to pick up some offcuts of thermal paper (don't know what it's called). I doubt it's better than asbestos - but it's got to be a damn site safer (and more PC).

Here you can see the de-rusted and repainted enclosure, partially reassembled.

All the nuts and bolts are derusted or replaced, and coated in petroleum jelly (vasoline). The contacts were cleaned with a fibreglass pen (cost about $10).

If I remember correctly, the bolts are BSW thread, so you can usually buy replacements in brass, from Bunnings/Mitre10 (at exorbitant cost). If you want some thermal paper I have some more offcuts...

    Cheers, Vann.

That's great info, thanks. I'll be wanting about 16' of 1.75" belting for my Wadkin LP - eventually.

Thanks Vann, I'll let you know about the thermal paper, I haven't had time to scratch myself let alone pull these apart to clean them up.

clear_out, what does the press look like? From what I could tell you can just use a hammer for the alligator connectors?
