Thanks Clear Out,
That's a good guide. I'll get a quote from the local foundry that my friend and I use and see how it compares to those two figures that will help to decide on my path on that front.
I was thinking of using the existing RU banjo, cast locking block and handle as patterns to cast those parts and sucking up the shrinkage as it won't affect the usability.
Making an RS style cam lock would require more thought and design work but I guess it's a possibility. I'll have to think about it, it would certainly aid in ease of use.

I had a bit more of a look Vann . I think the stand needs a rest post that long ( longer ) for the RS outboard.
A standard bed rest fitted to the stand has to be raised to where the locking nut is putting pressure at the base of the post and isn't fully in the hole under that point. And the swivel has to be raised a couple of inches to get the rest at center spindle height and its not seated well at that height.
If I want to get full use of the 8" to bed and get a 16" swing for long things on My RS8. I have to not use a standard bed Banjo or I only get 6.5" to bed 13" swing . Ive got to use the outboard stand for large spindle turning .
The RS is to low atm for me with spindle turning, it should be 2 to 3 inches higher to be at My elbow height. And if I did that the stand would have to be raised to work . Add on feet maybe?
For Hollow vessel turning they are talking atm in the Woodturning section of raising a lathe 4" above spindle turning height for comfy turning !
The standard rest fitted to Stand set up at center spindle height which is the same at the end of lathe for outboard work.
I set it with a chisel on rest so chisel was at spindle center .

Holds on by this much below the texta mark.

The long post rest at center spindle height is held better . Goes right through and out the bottom by 10mm

My RS8 is 43" to center spindle from floor.

The tripod stands would look to be identical.
From the November 1945 catalogue crudely overlaid iPad pic below.
Are you getting any new banjos cast?
Reason for asking I have a large spare.
It’s of a metal spinning lathe and takes a 2” tool post.
Photos below if it’s of any use to you.
I did post some guff on the Canadian forum re using it with the gap out on my RS8 but have adapted the gap itself.

Photos appear to have their own idea re order, but you get the idea I guess.Last edited by clear out; 29th October 2021 at 06:04 AM. Reason: More pics.

Thanks Clear Out,
I was thinking of casting a new banjo but if your spare is available that would save me a deal of effort. The RU banjo is 360mm tall. It doesn't look as if the metal spinning lathe banjo is that tall but seeing as I'd have to adapt it down to a smaller diameter tool post anyway that wouldn't be too much of a problem. How much would you want for it?
If you send me a PM we can take the logistics discussion off line.

RG I’m downsizing in the near future so after a bit of thinking here’s something else that may interest you.
Its not a Wadkin but it is a cast iron tripod stand for a wood lathe.
Photos show the height in relation to the spindle on my 8”RS.
It will need some adaptation to Wadkin tool rests.
I have amongst my auto body kit a heavy cast iron stand for my post dollys which I could use if needed (which is unlikely at my age).
I’ve been busy all day but will pm you more info on this and the banjo.

Hi Matty,
From memory it took the Wadkin toolrests.
The banjo was a freeby in Iron from the Foundry doing the castings for the Ena yatcht resto.
It was a Hamada headstock with gears and a 14’ long old Sagar bed complete with travelling saddle.
Did a few laminated verandah posts but mainly big (8’ dia) faceplate jobs on this set up.
Big beast but I sold it when I got the job at USYD about 2000.

I've seen 3 versions of the freestanding tool post. One was quite narrow and not as heavy as the later ones. One where the tool post fitted straight into the main casting and the third had a bolted on section that the tool post went into.
Theres also a couple of sizes of banjo for the RS.

Patterns
Hi Rob,
I've made a few patterns to have parts cast from.
3 different sized faceplates (6", 12" and 19"), the short (2 bolt) and long (3 bolt) tool rest and a right angle tool rest as well.
The tool rests were all made from looking at photographs so there will be variations from the genuine Wadkin parts. Photos below.
Let me know if you would like any of the tool rest castings made when I get them manufactured (type and qty) which will likely be in December for Jan delivery.
Cheers,
RG
