    Default Old Felder machines

    Hi folks,

I grew up with my German cabinet maker of a dad talking about old German and Austrian cast iron. Bauerle, Kolle, Frommia, Panhans, Martin etc. In 1970 he was a young "master" and worked in a small 3 man shop that used the original BU6 combination machine. Later when he worked at the NGV he convinced them to buy him a Felder combi in the early 80s and then later a BF6 series with all the trimmings. When he worked from home he had a BF6-31 which he still loves and uses to this day. Some have always asked why he doesn't have stand alone machines, but because in Germany the rent was so high and some workshops so small, guys like my old man got very very proficient on the combination machines, and his home machine shop space is about 16 square meters.

I was wondering if anyone here had/has an old Felder. I'm talking when they were still green in color and had the red and white Felder badge. Especially when they still made them with cast bases.

Some of you may even have fond memories of Hans Rauter, the unique Austrian gent in Melbourne who used to run the Felder dealership. Unique and strong personality, very outspoken and built his own unique looking caravan. But I do have fond memories being at his house and him making me hot chocolate as a kid on numerous occasions and that he gave me a very bright blue Felder cap that was too big for me as a kid.

The Felder nostalgia is strong with me....(sorry Wadkins fans.....although i'd sell a kidney for a workshop full of Wadkins)

    Cheers,
    Siggy

I'd be moreso interested in getting one of those Saw/Spindle Molder combos from their KFS series. The only gripe from the BF6 series, is that for cutting wider panels, there is an annoying gap between the saw table and the jointer table which of course are at 2 different heights. The gap accomodates the hinges for the jointer tables to lift them out of the way when thicknessing.

I remeber Hans, he was always very patient with the old man, and looked after me when I bought a combination machine in about 1990. The fellow in Sydney Dieter was good too, I still have his business card.

Hi Siggy , thank you for the great write up it's refreshing to hear your story. I know of felder but have not used any of their machines. But l have used lots of BÄUERLE machines and they are fantastic.

    Default cheers folks

Cheers for the lovely messages folks.

I actually just sent Felder an email requesting some information and manuals regarding certain older models of combi machines they made. I'm just hoping the email doesnt automatically get routed to the local Aussie Felder sales team who may just call me up and try to sell me a brand new unit.

    Fingers crossed!

I bought a BF-31 from Felder (Sydney) about 8 years ago. I assume they fill out containers with a few second hand units since this one came from Europe. It was very lightly used and works like a new one. It was my first table saw! I was thinking of getting a Dewalt or similar from Bunnings, but I had the space so I thought I might as well get my ‘forever’ saw instead of having to upgrade later.

I have never used the shaper, and probably never will despite buying a second hand CMT insert cutter head. I re-routed the dust collection port to accomodate a 150 mm hose and I gave myself some new Freud blades for Xmas. There is a Chinese mob who sell a helical insert cutter block for the jointer that I’ve been in contact with but holding off since I don’t use it that often.

Great piece of equipment and a joy to use.

If you are thinking of the really old cast iron machines, that’s the BF-5 series. I think they had a cast iron slider too, and not a format type running adjacent to the blade. Heavily built machine.

I used to own a CF731 that was Hans' personal machine. I just bought that BF6-26 that was on machines4u.
You can join the Felder owners group and download the manual, or I can email you a PDF.

Oh, and another comment...I think that the old BF5 series machines from the 1980’s were all three phase only. The BF6series did have a single phase option. On that series machines from the 1990’s, all the tables are at the same height, and even on the smallest, BF6-26, have a ripping capacity of 860mm. There is indeed a gap between tables which may be a no-fly zone.
