Finally got some more work done on the old girl..I visited my Mum and Dad down on the farm just before Christmas and used Dad’s Oxy and 30 ton press to get some of the Shafts out... ended up breaking the casting on the drill attachment but should be able braze that back together..it’s not really going to be under too much strain...probably stronger than the crappy cast anyway.
the lever housing below will need to be drilled out as the cast is very thin and liable to crack if placed in the press.

this is the drill attachment that broke on me.

Will need to fill a bit of the corrosion on the lever handle with some weld

I think I will turn new shafts as the originals are pretty pitted...will make a final decision once everything is totally cleaned..as it’s hand operated the pitting is probably not so critical as it would be if it was motor driven.

It certainly is going to be a mammoth job it get it back to a working machine... I was amazed that all the bolts came out reasonably easy.. some will need to be replaced as they are far too rusted to be serviceable. Of course its not just a matter of ducking down to the hardware store as most of the ones that need to be replaced are square headed. I will have a go at turning those from square stock.

My biggest challenge is getting the screws and shafts out.

I have tried heat and still can't get this sucker to budge... Starting to think that I may have to just cut it off and make a get a new screw made.. which will require the casting to be bored out, sleeved and a new internal thread....who know what that will cost... it's a task that is beyond my little lathe or my skill level for that mater
I will keep working on the bits that I can do for now and worry about the tricky bits later.
Gazza, I have found that for stuff like this, if after a few days in the electrolysis bath, it has not loosened, heat it up to drive any water out. Then several days of application of Boltoff, I think it is the best for getting into rusted threads. Another thing is give it a few good thumps on the side with a deadblow hammer, so you don't mark it.

    Rgds,

Thanks Crocy...... I think some of my issues is not being able to heat the parts up hot enough..... Thinking of reinvesting in and Oxy set again.
There really is only one screw that I think I will have trouble with now as I have managed to get the other one moving a bit. Its been in the weather so long any of the steel bits are well and truly corroded .

Wow Gaza. Really interesting reading. Looking forward to more posts. Makes me think of the hand cranked drill press that my dad had in his shed - that I wish I had taken when it was offered. Oh well, where would I put it now. It was a big one - dad referred to it as a blacksmiths drill. It did have a decent sized flywheel with nice cast curvy spokes

thanks for following along, Mountain Ash.... yes would love one of those old Blacksmith drills particularly the Dawn ones they are so cool...space is always an issue once you start getting into the bigger machines.

My first blacksmiths post drill is/was a Dawn No.611. I was surprised at just how small it actually is.

Sometimes the biggest problem is finding some wall space in a convenient location.
