Getting a Handle on a Wadkin CK
This is just curiosity on my part: the Pull Handle.
When I look at pictures of Wadkin's “baby” radial arm saw – the CK – most have a simple pull handle consisting of a handle with a 90° bend.

And the only cattledog cut of a CK I’ve come across (the 1936 catalogue from VM) shows just such a handle.
But when I bought parts off a munted Wadkin-Bursgreen BCK, it came with a more elaborate handle.

This handle had been modified (there was a coarse weld just before the thread that screws into the motor housing) and a hole that had nothing in it. I figured something had been lost.
But lately some CKs have been listed over here, with the same handle, and the same empty hole.

Any ideas what the hole is for?

The seller of this one found a use for the hole...
aPic6.jpg
For anyone who’s interested, the shaft from the motor housing, is ¾“ dia. The main body of the handle is 1 3/8” dia. by 3¾” long; with two ¾“ dia. holes (one for the shaft, and the “mystery” hole); the shaft is attached by a taper pin; and the body is drilled and tapped 3/8” BSW at each end. The handle itself is 2¾” long (excluding threaded portion) and has a maximum diameter of 31/32”.

In the top photo it looks like there's a ball handle or tee handle, on the LH side of the handle. That tapped hole goes right through to the ¾“ dia. "mystery" hole - so something is supposed to be clamped in there .

Hey Vann,
Your just teasing me, right?
That setup was for ripping (available on special order). If you imagine flipping the head 90 degrees, you feed the timber in from the other side to the handle (so the handle is at the out feed side), there was a riving knife, and then through that hole was a shaft with a hold down (to keep the timber from lifting), the handle on the LH side is to lock the hold down in place.
Cheers,
Camo
P.S. I only just saw the email you sent me, I will try to do some measurements for you tomorrow

Nope - just showing my ignorance .
To be fair - when I first saw the handle it was orientated the wrong way around.

Looking at this one again, I can see that the hole lines up with the blade, so now I understand .

Thanks.
Cheers, Vann.

It might be nice to put one of those little laser sight line things in there.

Hmmm... now that I do own a CK (or two)... maybe I could retro fit the handle (not that I intend to use it for ripping).
PKA 800a.jpg CK 349 of ~1936.
CK1.jpg CK 1011 of 1946 - now reduced to parts and scrap (it was so neglected and rusted it wasn't suitable for anything else).
