Default Hyco scroll saw restoration - help needed

    Team

I’m part way through a hyco scroll saw restoration.

Now I’m getting close to reassembling the scroll saw, I have been looking at my options for the blade connection to the saw.

Currently I have two bolts at each end that are tightened to hold the blade in place.

I believe this design is inefficient and I remembered seeing a better design on this forum. As depicted the following design is what I would love to get my hands on.

I have no metal work equipment to make a pair of these myself. Does anyone know where I can get some of these turned or else can help out?

    Thanks in advance

    Cheers stew

    Hi Stew,

I have one of these scroll saws. It's not in good shape. When first purchased, I ran it before stripping it down and I broke several blades trying to understand the tension adjustment and that clunky double bolt blade gripping system. The crank on mine also intermittently locks up, and there is lots of wear in the slide mechanism, so I gave up and its now waiting for a full re-build which will involve considerable re-machining/re-building of components.

I was planning on making a set of those quick fit blade grippers, and can easily make 4 instead of two. The only catch is that I won't have time to do this for a few months. I'm part way through making a sawmill and I can't afford to get distracted from that until it's done - its taking up all my spare workshop and driveway space at the moment. But if you can make a sketch of the part, and get suitable material for two sets, I'm happy to make one set for you. Maybe Michael (localele) can provide dimensions?

sounds like a plan I’m in no rush. I will source some drawings and material.

Btw Lyle from the forum has a spare gear box/ crank for the scroll saw. It’s worth contacting him.

    Stew,

OK, as long as you're not in a hurry.

My saw came from Lyle, I'll talk to him about the gearbox, but I really should find out what's wrong with mine first.

Your saw is looking great. Keep the pictures coming, I'm getting inspired to start mine when the sawmill's done.

I also have one of these saws and would be keen to get a set of the blade holders if you can make 3. The double bolt set up is less than optimal. Happy to provide the material for all three sets if you are ok to turn the extra OBR.
Those were the droids I was looking for.

I have a post on the restoration and rebuild of mine on here also. These holders were discussed in that thread. I haven’t gotten around to making any yet either.

I’m guessing a small batch could easily find homes.

OK, 4 sets and counting But this isn't going to happen until early next year at the earliest. My sawmill has turned into a huge project and I really don't want to get distracted from finishing it.

I'm keen to understand how these fit into the saw, what length they need to be, any critical dimensions, what blade length to purchase, where to purchase blades etc. Hopefully Michael (localele) will see this and be able to give us some dimensions.

I talked to Mike this arvo and he’s going to make multiple pairs (up to ten) in mild steel or brass in the next couple of weeks. He will post when they are available.
