I've had a look through the 1936, 1957 & 1958 catalogues available online, and cannot find a match.

If there is no tag then your chances of finding a test number are nil. Someone else may be able to recognise the model - I'm guessing it's in the 'G' series.

    Cheers, Vann.

Well Vann, you were very spot on with the 'G' series ..
Turns out it's a GM universal open end belt sander.

From the photos you put up, it looks likely that they are from the same machine. I wonder if you have ALL the parts?

That tag - GMA 144, test 8741 - suggests the sander was tested late-1930/early-1931 (if test sequence 1) or 1938 (if test sequence 3).

It appears someone started to repaint the sander, but only got so far. You can of course paint the machine any colour you like, but the original colour would have been a shade of grey. Back in the early 1930s Wadkin used a dark grey, but somewhere between 1936 and WW2 they changed to a lighter grey which is near as dammit to RAL 7011.

    I hope that helps.

    Cheers, Vann.

I had always called this type of machine a "stroke" sander. I believe they were especially used for sanding doors and maybe windows too. The machine I have came from a joinery that made exactly those products.

Hi Pantherea, those pics are from both 1927 and 1929 Wadkin Catalogues. I don't think there is anything on the internet that early from Wadkin.

Stroke Sander is more of an American name for this type of machine, Wadkin would have called it a Pad Sander, in their description they refer to the Pad, but really the same type of machines just different names, I have an Italian made one and when I worked for Atelier in WA, back in the mid 1980's, they had one for sanding veneered deck tops, but you really had to be carful not to sand through the veneer.

Well..... according to the catalogue cut Matty put up, Wadkin called it a belt sander - specifically a "Universal Open End Belt Sander". Just saying...

They are all belt sanders, US nick name (if you like) for them is stroke sander because of the action of the bed moving in/out giving an unbroken movement while sanding a piece, whereas UK call the platen (again a think a US name) a Pad and thus in the UK they are called Pad sanders. That is for anyone working in the industry while these machines were still a go too sanding machine.

A YouTube US video for any members who have never seen one of these machines.

Thank you gentlemen, following the above posts I had a good look at the machine tody, The light sand coloured pice that I posted with the question has a section that was not painted and the unpainted portion is thes ame colour as the other part that makes up the complete machine, I also found an old tag that was concealed stating that it was part of a "Strobe" sander. So with all the input the mystery is solved.
Last night I googled "Wadkin open end sander" and found a catalogue listing the machine as an open end sander and the catalogue had a detailed description of the machine. Thanks especially to Matt for that photo he posted.
