Default Restoring an old sewing machine table. Need help sourcing gold paint.

    Hi,

I am restoring an old Wertheim Sewing machine table for my wife. I have put it in an electrolysis bath and am painting it with Rustguard in gloss black. The features (lettering and picture of gnome) on this table were originally gold. my local Bunnings don't have a gold paint that I can paint on with a brush. They do have spray cans.

Anyone know a source for metallic gold paint? I'm in Oakleigh, Vic. This table would have looked a treat when it was new. It even had gold pin striping on much of the cast iron, too.

My daughter and I have a similar project on the go, an old Singer treadle sewing machine. We're using the White Knight enamel, a 50/50 mixture of gloss and satin.

My local Bunnings has this enamel gold: https://www.bunnings.com.au/white-kn...paint_p1568463

Somewhere I have a link to another supplier - I'll keep looking.

    Graham.

if you wish to do a top class restoration then you first use yellow paint ( for Gold ) then gild it i.e. apply Gold leaf

You could ask on this website. Maybe you can get a small can from overseas.

Now that's an interesting thought! I wonder how gold leaf will last outside but undercover on a verandah?

Would you clear coat over the whole thing after gold leaf is applied? Art supplies would have gold leaf, hobby shop for gold paint.

Here is a good way of painting raised lettering.
    Painting Raised Letters

There is a range of different types of "gold" paint.
Some more like dull yellow, to glitter/sparkle, to shiny metallic.
Check before purchase. I bought a range of different sprays last year for family Halloween projects before getting approval from the style council.

Gold leaf is used on Headstones so I don't think it will suffer too much under the verandah, I can't recommend that location for the rest of the machine

    Hello Steck

I remembered that when I was a child back in the UK I used to buy small tins of paint for modelling (aircraft, cars etc). The brand was Humbrol and the tins were tiny: Not much bigger than a thimble, but maybe ideal for your purpose.

I looked on Ebay and they are still available from the UK. Postage is several times the price of the tin itself for a single tin, but perhaps you might look at several tins and the shipping would be virtually the same:

The problem with "gold paint" is it will not last it will discolour, very little so called gold paint actually contains gold. Model engineers etc. all use gold leaf on top or finish their items in gold plate.

FWIW, the gold paint we ended up using was White King Super Gold.
It is available at Bunnings. Not cheap but very shiny.

With the small area you need you could spray some on a saucer and dab it on.

Here is an example of the Paint in use for a Halloween themed birthday party for my daughter.
It was a big hit on the day but don't think it helped the pumpkins longevity enough to tell you how the paint lasts.

All good but I don't think you'd want to make pumpkin soup with them.

I Used these too, when I was doing models. I think I will need a lot more than those little tins as there is quite a large area of gold to paint.
    cheers
