I have had a few double disc sanders pass thru the shed over the years.
There was quite a few made in house by Patternmakers/ foundries.
The Barker I would rate as at least as good as a Wadkin.
The last I remember for sale was the same bod in Queensland that Alison bought her circ saw from. Don't know if it sold or not? Alison may be able to give you contact details.
I visited some Industrial design model makers yesterday and they had a nice patternmaker made one. Not for sale currently but the way the economy is headed who knows.
They were employing 8 a year ago now just the 2 partners and one employee.
Most Patternmakers have already gone to the wall but there may be another round of collapses in WA and Queensland with the mining tanking.
When John's valves went under a few years ago in Vic all their good gear was bought by a WA mob, they are probably now looking down the barrel.

I can sell you a kit to make your own if you can weld.
I have a few 30inch Wadkin discs and a 2hp C&H variable speed motor plus shaft and bearings.
I'd even cut up the heavy angle for a frame and fabricated the dust/safety covers.
A suitable contactor shouldn't be a problem from the Elec stash.
Hows a genuine Wadkin top guard sound,have one spare also.

I will never put it together thanks to now having Cams disc and bobbin.

Had a search and the Grays March 2013 auction of Fidax foundry at Silverwater came up.
That one sold for $2519.
That was also where the last RS lathe went.
Ill see if that will come up too.
I did buy a grinder at that sale so maybe Grays somehow still let's me access.
Bit weird the way some stuff comes up and other doesn't.

OK the RS lathe sold for $2229.
And on the same search a Wadkin RU came up on M4U.
This was sold no price but was from Mallinga ?! WA.
So maybe another Patternshop has folded already.
Will the last patternmaker please turn off the lights when you are leaving.

Wow that got to be the oldest Wadkin sander i have seen. The Wadkin JR was made by 1916. I would really like to see that square tag above the wadkin name casting. You need this one Matty

Henry I was hoping you would chime in, if any one knows the where a pattern makers disc sander is it I will be you, as Cam calls you the "machine whisperer"
Thank you kindly for the offer of a kit one to put together, but unfortunately time is not my friend, the job will kick of in a few months perhaps sooner and I am still in the process of setting up a second shop to cope with the work load, I have 2 more Barker machines to recondition, paint, bearings etc..
The pattern making industry is in decline as you say, the actual trade through the years has gone through much change.
Over time I have purchased a lot of huon Pine from Pattern Making shops as many made the transition from using solid timber across to resin based pattern material.
This change also gave way to the exclusion of many woodworking machinery, I recall visiting one pattern shop 12 years ago that had all its equipment just sitting there covered in dust, the owner explained to me that the machines just didn't get the use any more, but they kept them in the shop "just in case".
I know of only a hand full of shops still going in and around Melbourne, many have closed their doors, the call for this sort of work is not as common as it used to be.
Who knows, I always think these things may come full circle, manufacturing eventually becomes to expensive over seas as a country who have had the monopoly becomes wealthier and the people demand a better quality of life.
Manufacturing may make its way back to Australia, but, will we have the skills and equipment to start again ?
I would like to think so in my lifetime anyway.

looks like the sander police came by and cleaned up the place. Hope you find some nice kit Matty and a Barker has always looked the part to me. Fine kit they made.

up on the Canadian forum you can hide as a member and look in on threads just like down here it seams. Can member hide and were are those setting?

You just have to not be signed in Jack, then you miss out on the pictures some times , some times you see them though.
I think you see them if they are stored elswhere.
And more advertising as well I think.

I see in the cut a paste i did 5 viewing this thread of which one was a guest so where is the 4 member i only see 3? could be a Mod i guess too. Anyway don't want to mud up Matty's thread. The barker i have seen from what you guys post of it is very heavy looking and i must say i like the band saws. Did they do a full range of machinery?

I don't know whats going on when the numbers dont add up?

What was Barkers range of machine types ? I cant answer that . There is a bit though.
I saw a table saw with a large sliding table to the left of the blade , no tilt to the blade . and it was Barker I'm pretty sure , it was nice.

If you click on "Settings" up the top right, there is a General Settings section on the left.
In there is an Invisible Mode switch if you want to hide.
